Brakes

Postby Sonik on Fri, 27 Jun 2014 2:27 +0000

Can any one help of fix my brakes. 3 yrs ago i put some power steering fluid in thinking they were the same evidently very different and damaging. Have since flushed fluid with correct type, replaced calliper seals 4 times due to swelling, replaced master cylinder twice, rear wheel cylinders twice, proportional valve, all lines, booster (dual diaphragm), discs, pads, drums and shoes. Put over 30 bottles of fluid through. Pressure bled. Vacuum bled. Its been to Toyota. Got it back on a tow truck, with a box of bits. They didn't wanna know about it. Three different brake specialists. And every service since then they hava crack at em. Still very spongy pedal and about 70% stopping power. Has 33s. 2008 diesle. Nothing else to replace bar the callipers them selves. Ive trawled this site and many others. Tried everything i or any of my mates know. Think its over but i keep thinking its gotta be something simple that i've missed. Brake light is stuck on. Thanks in advance.

Check out the rear brake proportioning valve.

Are you sure you're not expecting to much. I've yet to drive a Hilux with a solid pedal feel and powerful brakes, especially turning 33's. It probably one of their biggest weaknesses.

About 15 years ago my brother stuck engine oil in the brakes of an old farm truck we have, didn't take long to wreck seals and so on. 15 yrs on and it's still causing plenty of issues and they perform terrible. Obviously we have flushed the system countless time over the years.

But as rocket said, hilux brakes at the best of times are very average, make sure the rears are well adjusted. I'm sure you've been through all this though.

Good luck with it

If you are still getting swelling of the cups and seals, then there is still some oil hiding in the system somewhere.
Is it ABS?
Since you have already tried replacing every part individually, as they fail and still have problems there is one solution. Replace everything at once and I mean EVERYTHING! So it's a completely new system.
Brake master, front callipers, rear pistons, clutch master, clutch slave, proportioning valve, ABS unit, rubber hoses and ALL steel brake lines. Don't buy genuine steel lines, any brake specialist or good mechanic can custom make steel brake lines. It'll be a big expensive job, but by the sound of things it's already been an expensive mistake.
