MY LAST SERVICE AT A DEALER

Postby neil clarke on Wed, 09 Apr 2014 3:22 +0000

So today I booked my Hilux in for its last service under warranty (60 000 K, its a 2012 auto KN26) and asked if I could get the latest auto reflash.
Service person - there is no such thing
Me - I believe there is
Service person - who told you that
Me - I read about it on the Hilux forum
Service person - Don't believe everything you read on forums
Me - Is there a service bulletin out that would reference it.
Service person- We don't have time to read service bulletins
Me - So how do I find out about if there is one
Service person - You have to tell us that there is something wrong with the transmission
Me - There is something wrong with my transmission as it is slow to upshift and lock up
Service person - Ok we wont know if there is a new flash until the tech diagnoses the ECU and tells us what version it is
Me - how will he know if it has the latest version
Service person - he should be up to date with the service bulletins
Me - (giving up) thank you .
I wanted my fuel filter changed and was quoted $ 150.00 to get it done. I elected to do it my self.
End of rant.

dealerships are shit full stop.

occasionally you'll get a few staff who want to try harder and give decent service, but most of the time they're knuckledraggers who can't get a better job elsehwere, pushed by KPI's and bottom lines always... and service is atrocious as a result.

Its most makers too. I had a new SS ute a while back, had this almightly sound from under the engine ... took it straight back with 50km on the clock, told had to go to service.

3 visits later, each time told computer cant find fault and that the really loud CLACKITY sound is "normal".
Pushed them even harder, they then said "oh its just a gudgeon pin on the piston, which is OK".

UMMM... a failing gudgeon pin will result in catastrophic engine failure.

Failing all that i took to a local mech, with 000100 km on clock, who diagnosed a plastic clip was rubbing on the alternator spindle, fixed in 3 minutes.

Useless twats.

Must be disheartening for you to read these types of stories

for those of us who work in a dealer it is. I try to be as honest an upfront as I can with people. some people are just asses. employees included. I will tell people I will find out. it may take some time but I will do it. some people want it in 5 mins & can't always happen

I was just at coventry fasteners buying some bolts waiting to be served, the bloke in front was obviously a "mechanic" wearing a rolls royce service shirt, holding a typical parallel thread sump plug in his hand, when served he says "this is a sump plug from a subaru but the thread is a little damaged, have you got one like this but a coarser thread and with a taper thread, that should seal her up"

Bloody hell would you let him near your car?

This particular shop is in Artarmon and surrounded in mechanics workshops, not sure which one he belonged to.

Thought I may as well share my happy ending

A month ago, just before the 80000 service I noticed my intercooler leaking oil, I rang my local service centre and asked if I can bring it in before the service so you can look at it and order parts for replacement on service day, "yes no worries mate bring it up and the foreman will have a look, I wish all the customers were like you!"

2 hours later I'm at toyota, "no mate we wouldn't have told you to bring in for a look, you will need to book it in"

80000km service day, again told them the intercooler is leaking, picked up the car that evening, "wasn't the intercooler mate it was the injector seats, we changed them and its all good" I take the keys with a funny look on my face and go home. Get home and degrease all their mess away.

A couple days later, oil still leaking from intercooler, booked it back in.

Today, took it in and politely gave the guy the impression that I'm going to throw his desk across the room if this goes on much longer. Just picked it up, brand new intercooler, machined rear brake drums, new rear pads and cylinder, car washed. No charge. never had brakes done under warranty before!
The service guys family photos are safe, for now.

Toyota you may just get to service my car a few more times.
