10,000km service

Postby Shrek on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 4:31 +0000

Hey guys, I just booked my 'lux in for it's 10,000km service next week. I've got a few questions for the knowledgeable people here.
1. What's it roughly gonna cost me?
2. Is there anything I should be aware of that the Toyo mechanic might dupe me on?
3. I'm doing a road trip (all highway) of about 2,000km+ in about a month, is there anything extra I should ask them to check out.

10,000km service

Postby camwill69 on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 6:20 +0000

Shrek,
I payed $245 for the 10k service in early 07 at Scifleet.

Nothing to do with Scifleet, but mark your filters as this is the problem that I have had on the coast. They charged for air filter but did not change. Lucky I was on to them as I had done some dusty work and it realy needed changing.
Regards,

In regards to services, mine dont cost me nothing at all........LOL hahah sorry, I had to rub it in, I do mine myself!

anyway, on a serious note here, let me say this to you all who think that Synthetic Diesel Oil is good for our D4D's......it isn't.

I spoke to Andrew Coligan from Toyota's Technical Department last week. He pops into our workplace occasionally with demo and test vehicles and is chief technician in charge of Hilux issues.

I wanted to get the part number for the Genuine Diesel Synthetic oil that toyota sells, as I have to do my 30K service and thought it a good time to put it in.

He said stick to the standard Toyota Diesel/Petrol Oil of 10W30. This is the best oil for your diesel and replace it and your oil filter every 5K if you value your truck.

I asked why not synthetic, everyone assumes it works better.

His reply, it works TOO GOOD, in that it cleans the bores of the engine too much and can lead to bore glazing.....something diesels dont like.

The standard 10W30 will not allow bore glazing and always leaves a light coating of oil on all components for lubrication.

Just thought I'd mention it for you all out there using or considering synthetic oil.

Wow Max, you got me thinking now if it is the best oil or not.
Is this guy reputable in what he says.

Postby david allan on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 11:27 +0000

Max
well, you got me thinking
Might be going back to mineral base then.
Mines coming up for a service shortly.
Had it for almost 20k & always used sythetic due to toyota service dept recommending it

What do you use at your service dept for the hilux's
(Brand & Rating)

At chady toyota they give you 2 options, but recommend the synthetic 5w/40 casttrol magnetec.

So Max, you wont be trying full sythetic in your truck then.
Max, do you still do services for us

Dave,

we use Castrol 10W30 diesel/petrol blend oil.

that is we use the same oil in bioth diesels and petrols that we service.

services for you? as in backyarders?

if its someone local I'd try and help em out but I dont stamp any service, I just write my name and mobile number on the service book so if ever anyone wants to question my workmanship, they can call me directly and talk about it.

10,000km service

Postby 9W6VX on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 11:39 +0000

Max,

Over here in Malaysia, Toyota insists on using monograde SAE30 oil for the D4D engine.

I instead use Toyota's own 20w/50 multigrade mineral oil.

Thanks for the heads up.

Cheers

10,000km service

Postby Shrek on Wed, 25 Jun 2008 9:02 +0000

Thanks for all the replies guys. I will probably end up doing my own services when it gets to around 70-80,00km. But for now I'll let the mechanics do it. I used to use Conoco on my old V6 pajero, but that was just because it was free and had a good name. A mate used to let me sneak in and fill up an empty oil container from the dispenser in his workshop.

10,000km service

Postby redbeard on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 4:40 +0000

I just had my first non-toyota service (50000km). It was at All Terrain 4x4 in Melbourne. $210. Plus they went over the whole drivetrain and lubricated it all then showed me (I know, amazing) where toyota had neglected to pay any attention. They showed me the grease that came out of the prop shaft uni joint. Not nice. Didnt even look like grease. It is 50000km old. This could all be a con job but they impressed me.
I spent the whole time crawling all over their 6x6 80 series. Nice workmanship in it.

Hey Mmaaxx, have never heard of full syn oil glazing bores before, but will certainly stand corrected if that is the case. Generally bores are glazed by running the engine with no load over long periods. WE have serious problems with bore glazing in our generators. people insist on running a light and a laptop off a 16 KVA and wonder why it starts spewing oil in a few days.. anyway, I too was told that Fully Syn Oil was being used in my Lux at Toyota. that was why it cost $78 /6 liters. When I asked for a clean semple to send off for a comparison test. they told me it was actually a blended oil from castrol, but would not confirm the grade or type(syn or mineral). just a special blend made espeicaly for them.. was also told that every Toyota service department used the same oil. I then asked why the bottled Toyota oil was $29 for 5 litres over the counter. Was told I can use that oil if I wanted, but the service manager did not recommend it. Said it was not suitable.... what a load of BS.. needless to say, I didnt get my clean sample.

Shrek, before you take the car out of the service yard, go through the service book completely, get under the car and check that every item on the list was done. Mark your filters with a covert marking and check them to see if they were changed. I have had serious issues with this happening in the past, as far as brakes were not bleed filters charged for but not replaced. ( I have a K&N, but still got charged for a new filter that didnt get fitted) and so on.. I have found that no matter where you take your truck, no one will care for it as much as you. check their work is done to your satisfaction.. after all , your paying for it.. Cheers TOMUCH
