Replacing front brake disc rotors

Postby runningman on Fri, 25 Oct 2013 5:59 +0000

Hi Guys,
Am thinking about replacing my front disc rotors on my truck.

Is it a simple task of just unbolting the rotor off the hub, or is the hub and rotor the same one piece, and I have to remove wheel bearings from old hub/rotors and install onto new hub/rotors.

Thanks.

its pretty easy. the rotor is only held on with the wheel nuts so once the wheel is off just give it a bit of a hit with a hammer and should come straight off

As white_hilux said above its pretty easy as far as taking the discs off.
After removing the wheel you simply undo the 2 bolts holding the caliper on to the hub assy (on the rear of the caliper easy to spot) and slide the caliper off the rotor. Then the rotor will just side over the hub and studs with a gentle tap around, perhpas spray some crc or equivalent around the centre in case its a bit corroded on as many are...
You can leave the brake lines connected but be careful to try and not let the calipers hang off the lines with all their weight. Hope that helps.

It's also recommended to sand down the hub mating surface to ensure the new disc has a fresh, clean surface to rest against. Without doing this, the disc may not mount flush to the hub which will cause Disc Thickness Variation (DTV).

Here's a fitting guide we did for the 200 Series Landcruiser. It's essentially the same process as that on the Hilux, and gives a thorough step-by-step process for removal and refitting of Disc Brake Rotors. ;)

I wonder how many workshops actually sand back the rust when replacing rotors, not many I bet!

Bought some PBR Premium rotor discs from FWD motors in Brisbane (just around the corner from work), good brand for good price $55 each plus $38 per pad set. Thanks to the video above, the whole job was done under 4 hrs with drink breaks and get-the-kids-back-in-control-breaks! LOL

Bed them in as per internet advice and so far so good, haven't given them a long drive yet, so will see how they fair on the way to work Monday, to compare them to the old lot that were "warped".

Thanks again all for the advice.
Cheers
