Diesel auto transmission service - remove the pan or not?

Postby holdon on Thu, 04 Jul 2013 2:30 +0000

It appears it is a grey area about when/if you should change the fluid in the diesel auto transmission. I have done 140,000kms on the original fluid. Whilst fitting a trans cooler I noticed the fluid was very dirty..more like maroon in colour. So I figured it’s time to change. Toyota are saying no need, but I would like to change it. My questions is, Should I do a full service where I remove the pan and replace/clean the strainer or just replace the fluid through the lines?

I am happy to take on the changing of the fluid myself but not so much if I need to remove the pan. I have been quoted about $240 for the pan removal service versus the 50 odd bucks for me just to replace the fluid.

Is the full pan removal service required keeping in mind that Toyota are telling me there is no need to do anything at all?
