what to check after submersion?

Postby Roofes on Sun, 16 Jun 2013 6:38 +0000

I have tried looking but with no luck, if some one could add a link that would be great. If not im interested in your ideas.

Very late on friday night I attempted this mud hole and go stuck. the mud was very brown and silty. water was just below the bonnet and was came into the cabin, just under the seats and dash. I was pulled out after about 5 minutes and the petrol motor never gave evan a splutter.
I have removed the seats and plastic interior (sr) and i will take the door cards off and try to do something about my speakers. But my question is Do i need to change oil in the transfer case or gearbox? or can i drain all the bad stuff out and top up? These unlike the diffs do not have breathers. Also understandably it does not sound as smooth. Like there is grit in the bearings when driving is there a spray I can use to try and fix this?

any ideas appreciated

I have seen a few of these now. I would remove your SRS (Air bag) computer and make sure it did not cop any water. see pics! They are expensive to replace and are located ontop of the center tunnel under the air control box .

good luck

That's the expensive little feller there
Remove and clean if required.
PS remove battery terminal for a bit first to avoid possible air bag deployment

Yep ok . I would defiantly check your srs computer! Gearbox and transfer case breathers are high as is the front diff breather but i would also be checking your rear diff as the breather is on the top of the housing, unless you have lifted it.
Always a good policy to just check all your under ute oils just to be safe. MILKY replace it!

good luck .

I gave my 05 Xtra Cab a swim on its first major trip, the photo's look much the same as those above so I wont post anymore.
I was pulled out and then drove 4 hours home where I disconnected the batteries, stripped the interior etc and once the car was dry inside I unclipped every electrical connection that had been wet and cleaned it with CRC Contact Cleaner - There was an amazing amount of mud in some of the larger ones.
Have fun getting it clean, I left the high tide mark on my speakers as a reference point and there is still brown dust coming out of my carpets 4 years later.

The transfer and gear box should have breathers on them you should look at extending them and your diffs if you have not done them already. I would also silicone in the floor drain holes so they do not let water in so easy.

Yeah there r breathers 4 transfer and gearbox u will feel them if u reach up there. I,'ve been through bonnet deep water and still got water in the box on a brief 10-15 sec crossing. I,d b going through the lot of them if they r not extended. I think there might b 2 on the box alone.

I'd add pulling rear brakes apart, and taking all skid plates off to check for mud build-up, as well as flushing out chassis rails and a frustrating little spot at the bottom of your front mudguard just in front of the doors, seems to collect crap in there.
