Transmission (transfer) & Diff oils

Postby Seaair on Thu, 08 May 2008 4:37 +0000

Could anyone provide me with advice on good quality (and type) of transmission/transfer/diff oils.

I prefer Mobil or Penrite.

I have just run out of warranty and prefer to do the job myself.

Can anyone assist on type or grade of gear oil please.

I'm taking my hilux in for a 60,000 k service tomorrow and was going to get them to change the auto oil but as they think it doesn't need doing I will do it myself so I know it is done and thought I would do the transfer oil at the same time.
Auto is no worries but can someone tell me the drain and refill points for the transfer case

Are they the ones in this pic on. The bottom and right hand side up towards the top also any tips on changing the oil.
Cheers.

as for oil choice, any good synthetic gear oil will do.

I went with the Nulon full synthetic (75-90) for my gear box and will use it for the transfer case and diffs too

Yeah nulon 75/90 in the gbox and transfer (doesn't have to be synthetic) and easiest to run nulon ls90 in both the front and rear diffs. It doesn't matter that the front diff isn't limited slip the ls90 oil won't hurt it and it's easier then buying 2 different diff oils

Always undo the filler plug first!! Sometimes it gets stuck or seized and once you drain the oil your stuffed, and if you want to take it to a professional you can't because you can't put oil in it.

Gear box Filler and Drain plugs, they look to be on either side;
Filler on Passenger side, Drain on drivers side (is that right?)

I am going to do gearbox/transfer and diff oils on my 2006 SR 4WD (D4D) this week.

Can i get some more recommendations on what oils to run? Is it worth spending a bit more than the Nulon stuff at supercheap?

This one?

I'll have to see where i can get this. Supercheap have the semi synthetic listed on their site, but not the full synth.

And the diff oil is this one hey? Can use it for the front too?

axeten, you only need the lsd oil if you have an lsd. that said, it can safely be used in non lsd diffs

fwiw, I don't have an lsd, so I use the same gear oil across the board (the one you linked to)

I bought mine from auto1. iirc it's $80 for 4L

The filler and drain plugs, use a 24mm socket.
It is a good idea to replace the gaskets.
Manual and transfer boxes : 37Nms.
Rear differential fill and drain plugs : 49Nms.
Front differential filler plug : 37Nms.
Front differential drain plug : 65Nms, I do them up at 55Nms.
