Seat Belt retractor

Hi all,

Have searched and can't find a thread on this, apologies if I've missed it.

The driver's seat belt on my 12/09 plated SR5 sometimes doesn't retract like it used to and am wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience and rectified it? Haven't taken any trims off yet.

Does it happen when parked on a steep hill? This can upset seat belts. Just a thought.

Mines and 06 and it retracts whenever the f*** it feels like it. So annoying always jambs in the door

My 09 is a lot slower now as well
I figured it was dirt as there is a bit of black grime where the belt goes back in, just have not gotten around to cleaning it yet to see if it helps

No, this is just about anytime and yes if you're not careful it does get caught in the door. the other side (which gets less use) is fine.

Switch the passenger one over with the drivers? I'm having the same issue on my 06

clean the belts with warm soapy water most of the time it fixes a slow retracting seatbelt. They build up dirt and crap in the top guide. Quick way to tell if its a dirt or retractor problem is to pull the trim off and pull the belt out down near the retractor and see if it retracts properly

Im with you all, drives me insane, jambed it in the door twice this week already
its on the list of things to do, and the only real way is to pull it out and clean it properly I would emagine, sombody have a crack at it and let me know how hard it was and then ill give it ago pics always help as well.

I did not have to go that far all I did was clean the top guide and now they are like new again.
There was a fair bit of dirt built up on it that really restricts the belt from sliding freely and once cleaned was all good

abit of teflon/silicon spray works a treat ,dealers use this in there little bag of tricks as well.

I cleaned up my seatbelt and sprayed it all with silicon and it's still the same, maybe the retractor has had it... my ute is an 08 model, any other ideas would be great! Cheers guys

Sorry to fog a dead horse but I too have had this issue. I removed the trims and sprayed WD40 around the retracting mechanism and it retracts faster than a flick downstairs! When I put the trims back on I think the dirt/grime as hiluxsr suggested, then slowed it down. I think it could benefit from a soaking in a bucket of hot soapy water. I tried this with a set of tie downs and now they're as good as new

I am having the same problem Looks like a lot of grime on the top guide (shoulder height). I will clean as suggested and see how it goes.

Correct me if i am wrong but don't these things have a tightening mechanism if the car detects a frontal impact? This could make removal and cleaning something to be done carefully if it does.

The mech, afaik, uses a small ball bearing that when shunted forward or rearward cause the mech to "lock in place" until the ball rests and tension is released.

Well that's how the landrover defender ones work.

When i first bought my hilux, the previous owner used it as a work car. I didnt realise my seat belts were dirty until i kept getting dirty marks on my white shirts and work shorts. I was initially going to just buy new a new seat belt until i found out that they are over $200 second hand!!

So being the tight ass that i am, I unbolted the seatbelt from the bottom and pulled it out to full extension outside the car, closed the door to hold it in place, then proceeded to scrub it with a brush, dish washing liquid and warm water. They don't look brand new, but they won't get any closer. Them bad boys are clean.

Just make sure you can leave them out to fully dry so that they don't go mouldy when they retract if they are still wet.

Did you previously have an issue with them not retracting well? Did it assist in fixing this issue?
