Bit of a plug here for the company I work for in Weipa. (Kowari Motors) We service 4WD's for Rio Tinto and the general public - mainly current model Toyota Hilux's. Many of the mine cars we service, D4D models, are getting up to 280,000kms+. They have been very reliable for the mine. Much better than the LN167 (previous model). Surprised? I was.

How long ago was that ben as i had a lot stuff installed there for my last 2 hilux's and was very happy with the price and work done. Last time was about 3 yrs ago.

Is that all? That's terrible for a diesel! 280,000kms would be similar to petrol engine's range, but diesels should get 360,000+kms at least? Do they thrash them or do the ingest lots of dust or something? Why would anyone buy a diesel, pay more for it and have lessor performance than a petrol engine and have it die at that poor range when they could have had a petrol to begin with? You sure you didn't mean 380,000kms? This is very concerning indeed.

The mines Luxes are poorly maintained (frequency), abused and yes, killed by red dust. The diesel has more torque, better towing and handles heavier loads better. Diesel motors hold the gears better wen going down steep decents and engine braking.

They IMHO have a simple engine operation without sparkplugs leads ect, and handle deep river crossings without any trouble unlike petrols that lose spark and die.

I know in previous models there were components (mainly driveline) that only the diesel models got that were beefed up as such. Or, made stronger for a stronger motor.

Don't get me wrong, the petrols r great but I think there more or a city car unlike the diesel that is a workhorse

Shaker, I may be wrong but I reckon he means that he is servicing cars that have so far got up to 280,000 on them not that they are stuffed at 280. Nothing to be concerned about. If you service and maintain your vehicle there is no reason you can't get many many more out of a Hilux.

280,000 is incredible for a car used on a mine site. In our department, we have a patrol that has had 4 engines in 80,000. The lux has 150,000 it and is still going strong. 250,000 is considered a fantastic run out of a car. We were told that 1 kilometre on a mine site produces roughly 5 times the wear of 1 kilometre on road.

The d4d actually seems to have more prone injuries than the petrols

Btw The d4d has less torque than the v6 and less kw (of course). The v6 produces most torque right off the bottom too.

You'll never get miners using petrol of course but just correcting a few wrong points

Toyota make brilliant petrol engines. They need to get their shit together in the td stakes. D4d is over rated (still great tho) , but their market share and overall vehicle rep protects them especially in mining.

Fuel usage under weight is what kills v6 rep in the heavy usage game.
