K&N air filters

Postby mut59 on Sun, 03 Mar 2013 8:31 +0000

I keep reading about how good the K&N air filters are, so went to their website to check out prices etc. Unfortunately it would appear that they do not do a filter for a 2006 3l Hilux. Seems strange as they have listings for all the others. Was there something different with the 06 model or will one for another model do the job? :?:

Do not see why they would be different at all.

I just got one from repco for my 05 for $115, there normally $141.

As long as it's part number E-2296 for the K&N, you'll be fine. Not essential, but before starting the engine for the first time I'd clean the mass airflow sensor and reset the ECU to adjust for the increased airflow. That way you'll start with a clean slate so to speak.

Be careful with these type of filters, I was running a uni-filter for a while but found dust in my intake and it did not seem to give me any more power or fuel econ

I haven't had any trouble with dust getting through with the K&N in mine. Being the wet-type (oil-impregnated), I'd think it would be more efficient at trapping dust. And the reason you'd be buying these filters for a stock car should never be more power or better fuel econ. I bought it for the longer service intervals and the fact that it's washable. Treat it right (service in time, re-oil properly) and it should last a long time. Any increase in power (if even noticeable) or fuel economy afterwards is a bonus.

Im running a uni filter and can tell it sucks a hell of alot more air then previous which in my opinion is a good thing. My only worry from what ive heard is long dusty roads cake oil filters such as uni and K&N. For the cape i think i will run a stock filter, fuel consumption will increase slightly but for peace of mind would be worth it

don't go back to the stock filter, just add a ram head (snorkel) filter. They're about $20 each, and they stop most of the dust even getting to your main filter

Is that the sock that slides inside the snorkle or fits overthe head?

mine is an over the head. I checked my main filter after doing a bunch of dirt roads, and it was still visually clean

the "inside the snorkel" filter was more expensive, but apparently it stops almost everything

Thanks for the info fellas. I picked up the filter today and it definitely lets more air pass through. I'll have to look into the snorkel filter. Also thinking of changing my muffler and cat for more free flowing types as suggested in another thread. Can't really justify the 2 to 3K price tag for chip and exhaust packages. You can certainly spend some dollars setting up a good rig.

For my exhaust I just got it cut right on the cat, and a 2 1/2 pipe run to the diff.

Gave me a bit better response and acceleration. Also amped up the induction noise with the k&n and snorkel.

yeah, cheapest mod there is to just remove the muffler and replace with a straight pipe

I ran a K&N for a while in some dusty trips and when it came time to service it there was a definite film of very fine dust inside the intake pipe.. I'd hate to admit it but save the K&N for the street and stick with the genuine for offroading, especially if your going to be following anyone.

Also running a K&N, noticed a slight improvement in power and can really hear it sucking the air in when hauling arse up the ranges, yet to see what it's like in the dust, I'd change it to the stock like the other fellers said, got mine from repco $85 :D

If anyone is still thinking about getting a K&N air filter for your lux, or any vehicle. Autobarn currently have a 20% off sale on ALL k&n air filters ;)
Just picked up at E2296 for $79 bucks. Cheap as chips!

I'm quite surprised by these reports of the K&N not filtering properly, I had one on my Prado for five years and because I have a terrible memory for tracks, I was always following someone, so in a constant dust cloud when on dirt roads.

I never found any dust film past the filter (never ran a prefilter), the only issue I ever had was oil residue on the MAF, but this was probably from over-oiling on my part.

That said, I think I'll be running a Syntha-max or similar non-oiled washable filter in my Hilux.

I did my research and the uni filter and k&n were the worst performers for filtration but top for flow.

We didn't buy a hilux for power or speed, we bought them for reliability thats why I bought a AC Delco filter which filters 98% of particles up to 2 microns.

ACA155 for D4D, cost me $25.

I was doing 700kms a week for work and was filling up on Fridays on way home. Put the K&N in and I did not need to fill up till Saturday, I think it was saving around 8 to 10 litres per week with the K&N. That was in my 06 hilux.

I have one im my lux and got it bogged underwater for about 15min until I could bet pulled out, the intake box was half full of water (no snorkel yet) and the K&n filter did not let one drop of water through :)
