Crossmember under the drain plug

Postby Newi creeper on Thu, 03 Jan 2013 6:45 +0000

Just wondering what some people have been using when doing there services to catch the oil instead of it going all over the crossmember on the disel?? I got a cheap funnel and cut it up it kinda works but surely there's something better out there ?

A few people on hear swear by fumito valves, have a search here or on google, been thinking about getting one myself but for now it can act as rust protection.
The funniest part about you reading my signature is that by the time you read the whole thing from start to finish you only then realise there is nothing interesting in it.

Just bought two of those fumoto valves what a great idea! Has anyone had any dramas with them at all?

Quite a few Newtriton members have had these for a while as the set up is the same and no one has reported a drama. :D
I've recently ordered one and I'm waiting for it to be delivered.

Just a tip to save the mess on your cross member.......cut a plastic soft drink bottle in half ( long ways) and sit it on top.
Works a treat. ;)

I use the FUMOTO valve on my 2007 D4D with a short bit of hose attached for a very clean job.
In saying that, it does take about 30mins to drain the sump this way.
I still end up with oil everywhere when pulling off the filter though, it drips down and runs all over the bash plate.
Maybe someone can solve this problem and I will have clean pavers in the carport again. :D :D :D

There should be a drain hole on the filter mounting with a hose attached.

I also have the Fumoto valve, the one with the extended nipple, F103N. Like others have said, it takes awhile to drain, but it's a perfect excuse for having a few more of those amber-liquid-holder-thingies that us manfolk are so fond of.

If you leave the filter on until the very end, the filter will make less of a mess. Just attach a length of hose to that nipple on the side of the oilcatch around the filter and then loosen the filter. Any remaining oil will then drain through that hose. Simple as

I was thinking that. Was gunna measure the oil that come out and make sure 6.9lt or there abouts come. In terms of the crossmember, I have a alloy tray with raised sides that sits ontop of it.

I have had a look and can't seem to find this nipple.
Can you give me a rundown on roughly where it is and the easiest way to attach the hose. Do I need to work from underneath the motor or from the top?

It should be on the lefthand side of the oilcatch, nearer the engine. I was able to reach it from underneath crawling behind the front lefthand wheel. You also might have to clear the hole of any debris first. Sorry I don't have real-life pic right now, it's already nighttime over here ;)

If you do the change when the oil is warm then drain the sump and leave the filter till your about ready to refill. That way most of the oil will have drained out of the oil filter and there is hardly a drop spilt.

would actually be interesting to see how much comes out. like how much still sits around grooves and walows. i know when i did my injectoes there was fair amount of oil under the tappet cover

I'm only guessing that much comes out. I always put 7lt back in. The stupid dip stick I rarely check because I'll check it 3 times and come up with 3 different answers. I just keep my eye open for oil leaks or blowing smoke.
