Thanks luxy46,

Spent some time with a torch and found the drain hole and the attachment.
Will now spend some quality swearing time trying to get a hose attached.

If you stab the oil filter with a screw driver it'll drain quicker. Let the air in the top to drain the oil out the bottom. Still not perfect because of the drain back valve but better.

Well now I Know the meaning of "wyworrie". Got my Fumoto valve and out to do service. Armed with mattz's suggestion of using a coke bottle cut in half longwise, I'm thinking this is going to be easy! :D Wrong  yes you've got to laugh. A bit of back ground. I have worked around cars all my life, and quite a bit of motor sport, always done my own servicing. Back to the Lux. Crawl under with large tub, socket and cut down coke bottle (funnel). test funnel for fit, adjust, all good. Line it all up and crack sump plug, check alignment of funnel and tub and wind sump plug out!!! Now the fun begins, dropped the plug, the funnel moved and the first liter of hot oil went down my arm, so in the scramble I knocked the tub out the way and dropped god knows how much black oil on the NEW concrete drive. I get quite annoyed with a single spot of oil on the drive. This spot is about a F&*$^@g meter in dia. Both arms black and splashes on face and glasses. Wash arms, change filter (never spilled a drop). Fitted Fumoto and filled with clean oil. Took about a half hour for the job AND three and a half hrs of degreesing and scrubbing the driveway. Followed up with a bottle of red to soothe the nerves. Perhaps I'll start with the red next time and see how it goes!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad to hear that others have the same sort of shit happen to them when completing, what should be, an easy task.
I hope the next one goes better.

Hello all. I'm currently grappling with this crossmember issue. I can't seem to find a way to channel the oil over the crossmember and into the oil drain pan. I've tried mucking around with various bits of cut down soft drink bottle but nothing is working for me. Any advice would be much appreciated, as this is doing my head in!

Cheers.

They look great, but I'd still need to drain the oil before I fitted one right?

I make them out of an old oil bottle side. Put a few nicks in the side of the made unit to grab the under guard and your all done.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that. I was using a Coke bottle which was way too rounded to stay in place under the sump. Will have to find a more square bottle (like an oil one, as you suggested) and see if I can get that to work. I wish Toyota had just put the drain plug in a spot where the oil could drain straight down without hitting other bits of the vehicle!!!!

A mechanic I know always turned the engine over for ten seconds to suck oil from oil filter after draining oil from sump. Is there any chance this could harm engine?

Not only that, the oil is pushed into the filter, not sucked from it.

i find if i crack the seal of the filter before i even attack the drain plug then leave it to drain for about 4-5 minutes more often than less the filter drains through ;)

Everyone probably does it but for the newbies or those with no mechanical experience take the cap off the fill hole as well so you don't get an air lock and the oil will flow quicker.

??? The filter will drain anyway when the sump plug is removed no need to crack it.

Just undo the oil filler leaving the cap sitting over the hole or a rag to stop crap falling in and then remove the sump plug. Wait till the bulk of the oil is out and then remove the filter which by now will be empty.

Each to their own but cracking the filter before dropping the oil is just making more mess to clean up.

Hey guys, i just dropped my sump plug and drained the oil. I had the car lifted from the drivers side so it was on a angle. Ive put the sump bolt back up and filled it up with oil.
My only concern now is im paranoid not all the oil came out.
Will it matter if a tiny bit was left in there? It finished dripping.

Don't worry. There is always a bit of oil left in the sump, as well as the oil galleries in the engine

Thanks, another question- after the oil and oil filter change, the engine light came on. I turned the car off and on again and it was still there..
What could i have done?
I put accessories on with no oil in the car but did not start it. Could this have done anything to do with it?
