Oil change tip

Postby Tunnel Rat on Sun, 13 Apr 2008 6:50 +0000

Changed my oil & filter today.
I am sick of the oil spilling all over everything when you replace the oil filter.
So I tried something new today and it works great no more oil dripping over everything 8-)
Just punch a hole in the top of the filter then drain your oil and the filter will drain dry so when you remove it you only get a very small amount that sits in the dish.Just soak that up and you are all done. Oil & filter with no oil spill.
My set-up is just great to do oil & filter changes now. I do not need to remove my TJM fug guards as I have one of those oil taps with a 6"hose fitted to the end of it just turn the tap and drain away.

Hope this helps some of you who change your own oil from the big Valdez oil clean up after every O/C.

Hey Raty,

Any hints on the easiest way to undo your filter (apart from grow some muscles) Wondered if there was some hint or something...?

And tell me more about your hose set up. As with all those crappy little jobs, if there is something you can do to make them that much easier, they're more likely to get done. I'm fitting UBGs in the near future and the problem had crossed my mind too.

Yeah TR- would love to see a pic or something of your setup.

Do you worry that it could fall off or something and your oil might fall out without your knowledge.... that would b very uncool!

Skeney...the filter should not be on so tight as to warrent trips to the gym to get it off......

rule of thumb: 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn once the rubber touches the sealing surface.....any more and it is to tight.

If you fit a drain hose and tap it is also wise to fit a plug in the bottom of the hose.....just in case "murphy" comes to visit you....

That is how we did it on gensets with drain holes in rediculess (SP) places.

Hey Skeney
I use a 3/8 oil filter removal tool to remove the filter.Makes life very easy you just push a long 3/8 extension bar in the end and undo it.
I have found that no matter how lose you leave it it just seems to tighten up with time. The tool makes short work of it.

I do not worry one bit with the TJM UBG's the tap is tucked away in a very nice spot.As far as the tap leaking by itself not a chance in hell these things are made to last. They are used in the Marine & agricultural industry on big dollar equipment.
If I can find the link to the place I got mine from I will post it up.

The valve is a Fumoto Valve.

Try search in Yahoo etc and look for local distributer.

http://www.fumoto.com.au/

I cant remember the part number, get one with the fitting for a hose.

I also fit a cable tie around mine even though it is out of the way with the FUG fitted.

Good call with punching a hole in the top of the filter! On the side of the motor where the oil filter screws on there is a filter drip tray surrounding the filter with a 1/4 inch hose tail on the bottom side of it. I pushed a bit fuel hose onto this which stays there permanently. So when unscrewing the filter the oil runs straight down the drain hole and into the pan below.

We always put plugs in our drain hoses, just that little bit of extra insurance. I dont know how many times I have pulled sticks out of my bash plates. One large stick + wrong angle + 40kph = stuffed engine.

Cheers

Does your engine have an oil catch located under the filter? mines has a catch so when you remove the filter the oil catches in this and it drains off....

My old oil filter removal tool was a decent screwdriver. Punch a hole in the filter to drain oil. Then put the screwdriver straight from one side to the other... Instant handle.
Or try some of these

Guys,

I want to get one of the Fumoto valves.

Someone mentions one they have used as one of the nippled versions part number F101N.

On Fumoto's site they list all model Toyotas from 1988 on as needing part number F103N.

I'll contact them direct and supply them the engine number and details etc... and see what they say.
I was hoping some of you with these already installed in the 3ltr D4D engine might be able to tell me what part number you have used, please.

Glenn,

Check out their site it doesn't seem too bad. https://www.fumoto.com.au/

I believe the nippled version doesn't come with a hose. Shouldn't be too hard to find some to match and fix in place with a stainless hose clamp though...(thats my plan any how)

yeah just had a look, might get one soon
dont really want the fug being pulled on and off by toyota every time there is an oil change. i also dont want them to try and do it with it on because there will be oil everywhere

i just dont want them taking it off all the time, the bolts that hold it on are very easy to round then you wont be able to take them off at all.
if they tried to do it without taking it off there would be oil everywhere, bet they wouldnt clean it up very good...
