Slip it over the filter so that when you turn the rachet or bar anticlockwise the strap is tightened against the filter, once tight around the filter keep turning anti clcokwise till the filter cracks its seal. Should be able to spin it off by hand after that. The strap is a pain to use on a D4D.

I brought a 3 claw tyre. will do up and undo (not that i tighten filters with it)

Been a while since ive used one of them but from mem pull that strap out and feed it back through where ive put the arrow, pull it tight round the filter then the way the tool is laying atm pull clockwise will tighten the filter if you flip it over and turn anti clockwise will loosen. hope that made sense lol

Might be hard to ge that strap over our filters

Sidchrome one is how I busted the front vacuume sensor. It's just too tight an area to use it unless your lucky that a 10th of a turn is enough to loosen it cause there is very little room the Sidchrome handle will fit in and still move. Tool is great but not on d4d hilux it's just too cramped

Thanks 07luxyTD, It works a treat.
I now have another tool hanging in my shed that I know how to use for a change.
That now makes 3 filter removers that I can try, but I will stick to the Claw type for the Hilux and the others for the Holden and the Suzuki.

Thanks again,

Kev.

This is my favorite type of oil filter removal tool, been using it all my life as a mechanic. Can use with 3/8 ratchet or with extension of any length. Grips tighter the harder its turned, fits in very tight places and no filter it can't remove. Couple of them on eBay but Burson or Repco is best place to get one. Adjusts to different sizes and Fits wide variety of filters although there are 2 of 3 different sizes u can get.

If you're in a bind, hammer a screwdriver through the stuck oil filter and use that to turn it. I had to do that once before.

Lisle also make a good tool for taking off the D2 oil filters.
You can buy them through Bursons.
The Roo.
Passing through country and seeing country are two different things.

So I just tried the screwdriver trick
All it did was tore a hole in the top of the oil filter
So then I got a chisel with a lot wider blade on it attached a socket to it and a rachet all that did was tore an even bigger hole in the oil filter
I tried using the strap type tool to remove it first all that did was smashed my knuckles
Now the shops are closed and can't even go get the claw type tool to remove it till tomorrow now
Fml
Guess I won't be going g to work tomorrow now

Ya need to try and do the screwdriver thing thru the wheel arch so it goes thru the side of the filter, sometimes ya can jam it all the way the way thru but just check there's nothing ya could hit behind it. If ya can get it all the way thru it should get it off.

Oil filter tool

Postby gold member on Mon, 08 Feb 2016 4:32 +0000

Had this same problem last week with the oil filter on so frigin right ( courtesy of Toyota) I knew I was in trouble when the sump plug was a battle to get off, but damn that oil filter was so over tightened it was ridiculous, my only saviour was making my own tool again like this below from some RHS , tech screws and a length of a ratchet strap
Image

Even using this tool it mangled the filter but they always work. why oh why do they insist on doing the filter so damn tight, Always remember to put oil on the rubber seal of the new filter when you install it too. Screw driver should be your last resort. Good luck!
