Oil filter tool

Postby utemad on Sat, 17 Nov 2012 3:40 +0000

Hi Guys I have a 2011 d4d sr5 . Today was spouse to be a routine service but the filter was jammed on . It would have made life easy if I'd had the filter cup tool instead of the sidchrome strap version. Does anyone know where to get one and what size. It's a ryco z418.

I have the Toyota filter removal cap but last service I did it just free spun on the filter.
I reckon the best ones are the three prong craw type. Cost about 15 bucks

The three pronged claw one for me to.
The best thing about these is that you cannot be tempted to put the filter back on with it, because they only undo and cannot do up.
Maybe you should get one for the workshop that did your first one up too tight and loosen a few of their own parts.
You can decide which ones.

An oil filter should only ever be installed hand tight. Never use a filter wrench to tighten up a filter or you will come across the problem you are facing now.

I had the same problem. Made my own using materials lying around. Drilled a hole in the bottom of an old plastic mug and attached a bolt with washers and nut. For extra grip used a bit of inner tube rubber between the cup and filter. Works like a charm.

Thanks guys . I have done super cheap and Repco over last 2 days and both had excuses why they didn't have a filter wrench . 3 claw type. on To the bigger problem . Can anyone help me with what the sensor to the front of the oil filter is called or a part no. Cause as you can see in the pic the filter top of the sensor has been broken off when the filter tool caught it by accident. I did the Toyota dealer today and after an hour the best I got was a dazed look and no new part. Here's hoping someone here knows more than them.

Cheers in advance

Thats the vacuum switching valve, it lets in atmospheric pressure to control the EGR valve. What broke off is the air filter of the valve. For the part no., check out toyodiy.com, and enter all your vehicle info, search under the ENGINE/FUEL > vacuum and piping section

Edit: Just did a quick search for ya. Depending on your frame no. starting with KUN26 or KUN35, the part no. is either
90910‑12184 or 90910‑12093 respectively. It'll set ya back either $5 or $90. Pray it's the former...

Thanks heaps Luxi46
Boy I was peeved when I found it on the floor. I figured it was like a baby air filter . I tried looking on one of those repair manuals you buy on CD but it was nothing like a Gregory's manual and I couldn't find it . The stupid part was when toyota couldn't find it . I thanked him for his time and told him a kind person on the forum will know more than him ..
Cheers heaps for being that person

Hi Luxi46

Mate again thanks for your help. I got excited when I looked up the part and it was the $5 one until I read you can't buy off them and to ring your dealer. Back to reality $140 for the $5 part .. Does anyone know of a good online place instead

Yeah, no prob ;) . I'm sorry for getting your hopes up though by not stating that they don't stock the parts. I'm in the middle of troubleshooting that very same valve, that's why your post caught my attention. Looks like I'm gonna have to replace it also. Haven't rang the dealer yet, but if it's $140 I might have to look elsewhere. I'll let you know if I come up with another source, unless you come up with one sooner.
Cheers,

I'm pretty sure my oil filter has a self tightening mechanism in it...i've had the 'stuffed injectors, blocking the oil pick up' problem...so been doing an oil change once a month for the last few months and on every occasion the oil filter has been really tight...the claw type tool is the only thing that will get it off!

Ive been using the strap type for years,I upgraded the actual strap on it a while ago,but I managed to undo my filter on Thursday by hand........ That bloody sensor/switch is too close to the filter ,I nearly broke mine the first time as well.

Sorry to get off track a bit, but can someone post up some pics on how to use the strap type filter tools.
I have the claw type which works well and a Sidchrome strap type that I have never mastered.
Maybe the strap one is just set up wrong because it appears useless. I can't seem to get it to tighten on the filter .
But it's probably just my lack of knowledge.

The above is the webbing type filter tool I use at work. Does everything from 1" filters on little stationary engines, up to 7" diameter filters on large trucks. Just add larger breaker bar if the filter is tight :D
To use it just put the webbing over the filter and turn the shaft in the direction to undo the filter. The excess webbing twists arounds the shaft and tightens on to the filter. Quick, simple, multi fit.

If this (below) is the same as the "sidchrome strap type" you are talking about, they are useless. They are weak, they bend, they don't grip well and they only fit limited sizes of filters.
Throw it in the bin and buy a decent webbing type filter remover.
