Hey guys,

I want to start servicing my car myself at home.
That way I can do it more often and know everything has been done 100%

So first what do people recommend for oils and parts. How often and also what else should be check/done to keep these trucks healthy.

I had a read threw from the search function but only found single threads about oil or filters.
Thinking about having a one thread for all tips on servicing at home.

Have a look in the cars log book, It tells you what needs to be done and at how many k's. Or you can get servicing manuals that have more detail.

Like roofes said, get a manual and follow the book, the extra thing i'd reccomend is oil every 5000ks and filter every 10 000.
As for parts, you can go genuine but that will cost more, otherwise go to a repco/ coventry/ bursons etc and you will be able to get the right parts in a good brand for a good price.

My vehicle has never seen a dealership in the 110,000km other than for injector recall.

What I do each service, just as a guide:

Every 5,000kms
-replace engine oil with Genuine Toyota Diesel Oil
-replace oil filter with genuine oil filter
-remove and drain fuel filter, then refit and re-prime.
-check tailshaft bolts
-grease tailshaft
-rotate tyres and inspect brake components etc

Every 10,000kms
-same as above but replace fuel filter with new genuine one
-replace air filter with genuine replacement.


Every 40,000kms
-replace front and rear diff fluids
-replace gearbox fluid
-replace gearbox valve body strainer
-replace transfercase (and Crawlbox) fluid

The rest is pretty much self explanatory in the service book.

I do a few things more regularly, more for peace of mind than anything else.

Edit: Just to add... put her in low range atleast once a months on a dirt road or similar, to get those gears working and keeping then lubricated.

Is 15w40 oil better for the trucks? My dealer has the Toyota diesel oil, but its 10w30 if im not mistaken. Also apart from the Toyota oil, are there any other oils you guys would recommend?

Caltex Dello 400 15w-40 multi grade is pretty good that I've used previously in Landcruisers etc. I just checked the caltex website and that is recommended for D4D engines. I haven't used it in my lux as I've only just got it and it's still under warranty. But based on past use it's pretty good.

Isn't toyota oil just Castrol? Most of the dealers that I've been to only have this there. I've got mine booked in on Friday so will check it out.

I used it based on his recommendation, but I im going to change it, not too sure about that brand.

I do my servicing every 5000kms
this includes
Oil change(I use penrite 15w40 semi-synthetic oil) changing to 5w40 penrite semi-synthetic oil
Change oil filter
Change Fuel Filter
Check tail shaft uni-joints
Grease Tail shafts
Check all wheel bearings for movent
Check diff, gearbox and transfer oils.
check clutch, brake and power steering fluid
Check coolant
Check all brakes and lines.

Every 30,000km
I change diff, gearbox, transfer case, clutch and brake fluid.

oh and the 30,000km service includes the 5,000km service

Bump! Still wondering what oils guys are using when servicing their trucks. I'm going to start doing the 5,000km interval servicing with mine.

I use Royal Purple synthetic, expensive, so not good if you're on a tight budget.

And just as I used to do with my old Prado, I order TRD oil filters off ebay. (not an option on the diesels though)

I always try to use the highest quality products I can afford when servicing, gives me peace of mind.

I use Fuchs Ultralube, bloke at Canberra Diesel got me onto it when he changed the injectors.

6 to 7 litres so buy 10litres of oil

6.9Litres from memory. I used to just put 7 in. They will run with 9 litres in them Oil and fuel filter every 5,000km. Used ryco filters and Nulon oil. Change out sump plug washer every 4 services. Grease drive shafts, check gearbox, tranny and diff oils. Also 300ml of 2 stroke oil, and a dose of diesel power after every service. Also wash out the air filter and re-oil it. At the end i started to put a can of wynns egr 4 cleaner through it

I use delo 400 le and a Donaldson filter kit

Can anyone tell me the brake fluid capacity for a KUN26 07? Owners manual tells you fluid type but not capacity.

500ml will service for a flush.
