How hard to replace rear wheel bearings?

OK...been getting some knocking sounds in the rear end at low speed.
Crawled under this morning to check suspension & ubolts etc & all nice &tight.
Put the back end up on axle stands & there's definitely sideways movement in the wheels (yep wheel nuts are tight!).

Some I'm guessing it can only be the wheel bearings?

I know that these are a full replacement press in type bearing, so whats involved in replacing them myself?

the axle has to removed then the bearing has to be cut with a grinder then cold chiseled off.. when the new bearings put on the abs gear has to be put into the exact same spot. I
I removed my axel then gave it to a mechanic to remove and install bearing cost me about 150$

I dont have ABS so that not an issue.
Wasnt sure how hard it was to remove & refit the bearings to the axle

mmmm....its a matter of the hassle of doing it vs $$$

Toyota quoted me $1000 for parts & labor this morning. Can get the bearing kit on ebay with decent bearings for $55 per side.

Easy as but you need a press. Dont get the cheap chinees bearings or you will find youself redoing them in 6 months. I didnt use a grinder to get mine off, used a chissel and banged 2 sides to push it out of shape slide it all off. Then push it all back on. Get a diagram off that diy toyota site makes it very easy.

Took 2 or us half a carton and about 3hrs, but my bearing was fcuked.

It's a pain in the #&%@ doing the bearings, don't forget to get the two thin rubber o'ring's and seals for the axle housing.

You have to disconnect the hand brake cable and remove the brake line each side as the backing plate sits between the hub and bearing...... the backing plate and axle comes out as one piece.

What do you call decent bearings?

Its all straight forward yes a pain but by know means is it hard to do (basic had tools & a press), most if it is the same as pulling the center out.

With the bearing you do get what you pay for, go to a bearing service center tell the what its for, or if in doubt go genuine.

Hi had a good read through the service manual & whats involved....looks like fun!

For those that have done it:
- do the rear brakes have to be totally disassembled from the backing plate or can they just have the brake lines disconnected>
- I gather that once its all out that the backing plate needs to be pressed off the axle to get to the inner bearings & seals?

Here's a kit I'm looking at if I decide to do it myself.

The drum had to be disassembled to fit over the studs. The backing plate is only held on with the 4 bolts that hold the axle to the diff so it just taps off. The hardest part is getting the bearing out of the case/retainer (check and remove any sir-clips before trying to remove any of the bearing parts).
My bearing was welded to the case and I only had 2 balls left in the bearing so it was shagged, and almost impossible to get out. Had to used an oxi, chisel hammer and grinder. :? but it 'should' push out if its in ok condition.

Get a workshop manual. It has all the step by step process, including the prep work (ie removing the brakes).
