In my experience.

For driveshaft slip joints, uni joints, suspension bushes etc most just use what is on the shelf which is usually high temp bearing grease as this is the critical one to get right.

For parts that are exposed to the elements such as mud, dirt water etc then I'd recommend a lithium complex grease as it will resist washing out.

Just follow both driveshafts, you will see zerk nipples inside the yokes/uni joints pump until you see grease coming out which won't take much as its a small cavity.

Slip joint you have to be careful, usually two pumps will suffice.

Brands are much of a muchness, if its a lthium complex then find what is cheapest.

The manual says for the slide yoke to use Molybenum litium base chassis grease or lithium base chassis grease. But for the spiders it says just Lithium base chassis grease.
Does this mean I can just get a lithium base (non Moly) chassis grease and use it for both?
Conversly, can I get a MOLY lithium grease and use it on both?

Also, is Spiders just another name for uni joints or is it a different part??

I was thinking of getting one of the 2 greases below, are these suitable?

Valvoline Valplex EP or Castrol LMX

There's also Castrol LMM available, this appears to be Molybdenum

I decided to go with Nulon Extreme Performance L80 because it's Lithium based NLGI 2 and specifically said it's good for CV's and Uni's and it's extremely water repellent.

Your recommendation had some impact on my choice too :)
I probably wouldn't have given it a second look other than I saw it had been recommended (by you) on newhilux

Castrol lmm on cv's and uni
Castrol htb on wheel bearings
Castrol epl on chassis
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

So glad to see that image.
Been using Nulon Extreme mainly for trailer bearings and on my Rhino.
I rate it highly, good to hear others do to.

Yoke greasing

Postby rob101 on Mon, 28 Mar 2016 10:13 +0000

Hi,

How much grease do i inject into the yokes (front and back) on the driveshaft?
Its easy on the uni-joints 'cause i stop when i see the old stuff coming out.
I'm aware of a driveshaft 'clunking' effect on some 'luxes, and i don't want to blow a seal out or damage the shaft.

Anyone with some experience, it is for a my09 4x4 lux.

(I'm also thinking of excessivly over-injecting the uni-joints to blow old crap out anf fill with new grease, rather than a top-up)

Ok probably a stupid question, but this is why we're all here though i guess lol..

How do you know if they need doing, if someone else did the last service and your JUST taking there word for it that they had been done?

Is any damage done by putting too much in? I was pumping the shit out of mine a while ago cause I was expecting grease to come out when its full. After that it clunked a lot lol, and then back to normal... I think. Obviously didn't know what I was doing, and had just watched a youtube video of some american car being done.

Most will leek somewhere, but that all depends on your grease gun pressure,
Too much and they will run hot and fail, too little or wrong great and get hot or run dry in load side and they fail,
I normally use castrol LMM, good for uni and you can use it in your bush's as well

Over greasing can happen yes and do big damage to your diffs. If you have the car in the air and grease the slip join untill it moves it will put pressure on your diff pinion bearings once lowered and cause premature diff wear.

Proper precedure is pump untill the shaft moves, un do the nipple (7mm i think?) Lower to ground and bounce vehicle until grease has stopped re fit nipple.

Service greasing summary

Postby Kodric on Fri, 12 May 2017 1:46 +0000

Hi,
Here are some pictures for those who are doing it the first time or only want to double check.

- If you don't have any after market parts that need periodic greasing, you only have to add grease to front and rear driveshaft.
- 2 - 3 pumps with a normal sized grease gun will suffice.
- The type of grease doesn't matter so much.
- Intervals: I grease on oil change intervals. If you drive off road it's recommended to grease on 5000km. If you go into water re-grease in a matter of a week.
