Introducing a valve where you origininally had a plug is not a good idea. Valves do leak occassionally, plugs don't.

Gee .. this thread just lives forever dosent it.. !

no, valves dont leak.. (unless they're not installed correctly in the first place!).. i do a lot of work for subsea valve manufacturers who do the valves for BHP and Rio, and when i first got my Fumoto i took it and showed them.. they pulled it apart and said it was excellent, then they bought some as well..

http://www.fumoto.com.au/

is the main site for them.. there is a lot of information on there about the build quality and robustness of these units.. have a read.. they are really a good product.. Ive had mine on now for over 3 years and never had a problem.. it makes it a lot easier to drain oil with the TJM bash plates on too.. all i have to do is push the drain hose that i use on the fumoto and turn the lever.. (yes you still have to convolute your hand on strange angles), but it still is easier.. and you dont get oil all over the inside of the bash plates etc..

Cheers

I don't deny convenience factor. I don't even question quality of manufacture. My remark was more a comment on a probability for failure of a (relatively) complex device performing simple function. This device can not possibly be more reliable than a sump plug.
Even manufacturer itself recommends using a cable tie or a hose clip to secure a valve lever if used in "exteme " conditions (they don't say what extreme conditions are) . I have never seen these in OE application.

the thing is with these, they are not exposed to any form of damage or any form of access from branches etc.. (which is all that fumoto are covering their arse over).. and if you have FUG's then there's even less chance of anything getting anywhere near them..

the other problem with sump plugs is that according to manufacturer spec, you should replace the crush washer EVERY time you remove and reinsert the sump plug.. does everyone do that.. nope.. what about overtightening the sump plug ?.. undertightening ?... potential for failure exists in everything... I'd say there was actually less potential for failure in the fumoto than a sump plug being constantly removed and reinserted...
