Gearstick Bush Fault

Postby 10K on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 3:49 +0000

I recently had the gearstick bush replaced under warranty in my 05 D4D.
Changing gears had become pot luck!
The top of the stick could move independently of the bottom part. I kind of got used to it, but everyone else that drove it complained.

Toyota Part Number # 33530 OK142

You will feel a connector halfway down the gearstick, this bush became completely loose on my truck.
Toyota replaced this part without too much drama... I did provide the part number and precedent of other vehicles having it done under waranty.

Hope this helps anyone else having troubles with their gearstick/gear selection.

Cheers

Gearstick Bush Fault

Postby kazdan69 on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 6:18 +0000

hiya 10k,

Can I ask if this happened o/night or whether it gradually happened? Reason I ask is that for the past few weeks I have been getting a

tinny, rattling sound from the gear stick, I hadn't taken too much notice as yet, until I read your post, as I was going to get Toyota to look for it on the service this week.

Any clarification would be of great help.

Thanks Dan

Gearstick Bush Fault

Postby 10K on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 6:33 +0000

Hey Dan,

Kind of happened over time, though other drivers of my truck were complaining from about 20'00kms, now has just ticked over 70'000kms.

I didn't really notice the difference until I drove a brand new truck (mine is now over two years old) and felt the difference.

Definately a huge difference now.

I had no noise to speak of, just a terrible feeling gearstick and shift.

Cheers

Just had my gear stick replaced under warranty. The top sleeve had dropped down (a bush was broken or something) so I was driving a sports hilux for a while as the whole stick was several inches shorter than usual. There was no telling lead up to it, just happened while changing gears one day. Took them about 4 months to replace it. Apparently there have been a number of problems with them and they couldn't get any in while Japan was sorting out what to do. I love the stories they tell.

Is this gearstick the same length... or shorter/longer?

i cant tell you exactly but it is very similar in length to the original. the only difference i could find was the tapper from the larger diameter section (that houses the bush and fits onto the gear selector from the box) to the more slender shaft that runs up to the top knob is far more angular than the standard part as in it has distinct angles on the change in pitch in the shaft as opposed to the standard part that was a gradual curve.

this is in the 2wd version of the lux tho and i think the 2wds have longer sticks im not sure tho.

Ha, is it easy to replace, and just use the part number that is listed at the top, thanks Steve.

The sloppy gearstick is apparently a "history" problem and quite common. I had mine replaced by the selling dealer (secondhand) a couple of years ago and when it was fixed the gearbox started throwing oil all over the place under the car. After a lot of searching it turned out that a rubber breather gasket on top of the gearbox had been put back in upside down allowing oil to escape. Once this was rectified all was ok and I have had no problems since.

Well that last post is a little scary!!
Anyway my centre bush coupling has failed and stick is as loose as a goose... I didn't really notice as it has happened over time, but had a drive in some work luxes and there's are a lot firmer.
Toyota say $400 for part plus few hours labour :o :o .. no chance of out of warranty claim.
They are not replacing the coupling but putting in a whole new one piece gear stick... so i am presuming like matty87 has said above that is is the stick from the cruiser ute.

don't get a new one, they cost $350,the best thing to do is fix it,takes about 20min work and over night to dry and will cost you $20 to do the job.
drill a small hole in bottom of gear stick, about 1 1/2" up from bottom,so you can squeeze the sikaflex in.
allow to dry over night and bobs your uncle
sikaflex is about $20 from bunnings or supercheap

Mine had the same problem, I got a washer and drilled it out and welded the gear sticks together. Solid as a rock. I get a small amount of transmission whine in the cab but hardly noticable over the engine and cab noise.

Got this fixed today at the stealer.. WOW!! didn't realise how bad my old one was, I reckon i had 50mm play all around when in gear, now it is about 5mm.. nice and tight between the gears.
looking at the old stick now i see a fix wouldn't of been to hard but i wasn't confident in doing it myself without seeing how other people have done it.
At least now i know i have a nice stiff one piece shaft!!... :o

I done this fix over the weekend as mine was getting pretty bad and it was very easy to do.
Used Sikaflex and what an improvement and you don't get the whine through the gearstick if it was solid

Will see how long it lasts but it wouldn't be that hard to do again

"hd lux" thanks for the tip, I work down Caloundra way by the way, the place where you may have got the Sikaflex from!
