Tailshaft centre bearing support brackets RECALL

Today Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Australia announced a recall on 116,507 four-wheel-drive petrol and turbo-diesel HiLux vehicles produced between January 2005 and February 2010.

HiLux two-wheel-drive vehicles are not affected.

In rural areas, when the vehicle is frequently accelerated or decelerated quickly on rough roads that feature extreme conditions, the rear tailshaft centre bearing support brackets may give way. These conditions include severe corrugations and high numbers of cattle grid crossings.

This recall affects Australia only. Only 19 cases of the condition have been reported in Australia. One incident was reported. There were no injuries associated with this incident

Yep mines infected too. 01/06 D4D DC.

Maybe they can carry out the bonnet catch recall procedure at the same time. Last time I booked it in for that one they had the Lux all day and said they ran out of time. :? That was the only thing it was booked in for. :x

just checked my Vin, yes it is infected too....I wonder whether the crawl box would be adding more stress to the center bearing when used?

Like buggery Im gonna leave my hilux at the dealership.....they're dreaming! Ill see if they'll give me the repalcement parts and Ill change it meself....

or just weld some RHS onto the existing brackets to strengthen it up...dont know, will work something out.

I suggest everyone just jump under their hilux's tonight in the garage and look at the brackets in mention with a light, just to see if there is any visible cracking or not.

Mines an 04/06 build DualCab....

make sure you enter the MR0F as a zero not an 'O'...??

Yes, the VIN search indicates your vehicle is covered by this recall.

You should soon receive a letter from Toyota Australia advising you what to do. In the meantime, you can continue to drive your vehicle.

If you have any questions, please contact your nearest Toyota Dealer or call Toyota on 1800 252 097.

http://watoday.drive.com.au/motor-news/toyota-recalls-116000-hilux-utes-20100908-1509y.html

The repair involves checking the tailshaft bracket for damage and generally takes about three hours, although cars with more damage could also require replacement of the cross member.

How the hell does checking the tailshaft center bearing bracket take 3 hours? :o

replacement crossmember? So now it looks like its not the actual center bearing bracket thats breaking, but sounds like it must be shearing off the crossmember?

Welding in a new crossmember would be a HUGE job, probably requiring lifting the body off the chassis to do properly.

Last year with the 200 series chassis cracks the vehicles affected had to have the bodies removed to fix/weld up the chassis.

Yep the vin # is correct. If you miss a number or so on it does not recognise the vin.

I was crawling around under mine when cleaning it after last weekends action. I was feeling around that tail shaft center mount for no particular reason. I did think it was quite odd that it had so much movement in the rubber mounting bracket. Better have another look now that this has come to light. I only just got back on my peddly too after dropping into city Toyota for her 20 000 service. I wonder if they'll look at it while they have it???

This is a very strange recall as they are only inspecting and repairing if required!

So are they now going to honour this item for the rest of the life of the truck? If it’s a fatigue problem due to an engineering design it must be replaced.

I’m just wondering if this problem is a little more convoluted then the press release is suggesting. I have noted a lot of people complaining of transmission vibration problems from new on the Hilux and I have a sneaky suspicion that this vibration problem over time is fracturing the centre bearing mounts.

So it’s either Toyota using a poor quality centre bearing or they are having alignment problems in the Thailand Hilux factory!!!

Still love my Hilux – It just sux that the tight ass money men can even get inside Toyota and reduce build quality to save a few cents.

The way I read it is that the will be putting re-enforcing brackets on all vehicles and making repairs to the crossmember of the necessary ones.
