What were your warranty claims and recall information

Power steering Noisy

Postby D4D for ME on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 10:58 +0000

Hi all,
I have noticed over the last month or so that my power steering pump is becoming noisier in operation than it used to be. The noise sounds like the pump is cavitating and is particularly noticable when turning at a road intersection etc in second gear with low engine RPM. I realise this is the time where most flow is demanded of the pump, but as mentioned it does sound much noisier than it used to.
I'd love to hear if any one has had any simmilar dramas or warranty claims. I only have about 2 monts of warranty left so wish to get this sorted out soon if possible. Thought I'd arm my self with a bit of info first though before I go to visit the local Bull S#!t dealer about it.
Thanks, Nick

I'm guessing that by the fact there has been no response that this isn't a common fault. I have read that some people have had steering pumps and racks replaced under warranty before. I f you have, could you please let me know what the fault was before replacement.
Cheers, Nick

Just for an update. West Orange Motors Toyota replaced the power steering pump yesterday under warranty after their tests found it to be faulty.

Vehicle is out of warranty now however Toyota have just put another new pump on it after it started doing the same thing again. Last pump only did 15000kms so I wonder how long this one will last?

I just got that noise after a trip to Mansfield in my SR5 09. Has got quite noticeable and took it into the dealer. They say it should be ok and to leave it till the 60,000km serrvice. They told me its due to taking the hilux off road and the bigger tyres. I just upgraded my tyres to 31 inch Mickey Thompson MTZ, which to me isnt a huge change from 30inch. I have only done 3 trips in it since i bought it in Dec '10, and haven't been hard on it. Should I wait till the next service like they said or get it in to be fixed? Would this be under warranty if I use it off road?

I had a noise in my pump and had had a service done 5ks before steering started to get stiff checked the oil level and the oil was black the dealer said the rack had water damage to it and either of the rack or the pump could be claimed under warranty was quoted around the 1300 for the rack and 1400 for the pump.So my advice to you is get it there sooner than later. I ended up with a after market rack(1100but could have got one for 900) and a new toyota pump off ebay under 400 so costly, this happened at about 75ks.blighters26 to me they are a 4WD to be driven off road toyota need to toughen them up!

there hasnt been many instances of this reported.. and a lot of us do a lot of 4WDing with 31+ tires and have never had a problem.. I'd put it down to just 'one of those things'.. things wear out, things fail..

Got a new pump put in under warrenty. 8000kms later the new one is shot! Can any one shed some light on why it has gone? Toyota has maintained bigger tyres and lift is the cause! Frustrated! We don't drive it aggressively off road!

Well I'm just about to go back to Toyota to replace the third pump! They begrudgingly replaced the last one after Toyota told them to bring my lux back in and check the rack seals. They were all good so they replaced the pump. Toyota said tge pump had been flogged out and had a ton of metal in it. Every time the pump goes it's around the 6-7000km mark it cacks itself. I'm not happy bout going back in and hearing them tell me it's due to the 40mm lift, bigger tyres (31inch), and the off road driving. This time around the lux hasn't left the bitumen. Any suggestions or ideas?

An interesting read, I too had an issue with my power steering, but instead of the power steering pump being faulty it turns out it was my power steering rack. Very strange because it just let go on the freeway and turning became almost impossible with 33's on. Toyota had a look and said they will not fix it under warranty due to lift and tyres, 1st quote for new rack etc was $6,000  They then called me back 20 minutes later and told me $1,900 for new rack, recondition my power steering pump, new fluid and labour. So far so good :D Good luck to all you guys!

Just picked up my lux maybe 3 weeks ago, have noticed a clunking noise everytime I take the first turn after starting up the car. The sound comes back every now and then in tight corners, I asked Toyota and when I showed the mech in the morning they said its just cuz the car is too new, and hasn't worn in yet? After he had a look at it he said its just normal one of the pulleys is pulling the wheel back? I'm not too sure if I believe that so I'm considering taking it to a different dealership. Car only has 700kms on it too.

I've had a little but very annoying noise which sounded like it was coming from behind the dash! Dropped it off at the dealership this morning and they just informed me that the rack is making the noise and its coming up through the steering column. Car is a 700km old 2013 hilux sr5 TD.

I've found out that the noise is normal on 2011+ hilux sr5's, its the new tcs and stability control system, it makes a test noise when you first start the car and also when it is active. Can't believe I went to 3 toyota dealers and all of them didn't know and actually took apart the steering rack to have a look.... I'm not sure if the previous models had them, as I never had it on my old hilux.
