Old thread I know.

But has anyone else had clock spring issues with 2010 and newer hilux's. As MY WIFE'S horn has stopped working. To repair the c**k spring or spiral cable on my 2011 SR5 with VSC will cost over $1040.00 just to supply the part. As that price to repair my horn is ridiculous.

What has VSC got to do with the clock spring?

Who quoted you that?

There's plenty for sale on eBay might be worth a look. The only thing I can think of would be if VSC has a steering angle sensor in the clock Spring too

That's correct. It has something to do with steering angles.

I got the price from 2 Victorian dealers and 1 Queensland dealer.

Yeah it will be so the VSC can tell if you try and correct the vehicle at the same time as it's doing its thing. You don't have 5 year warranty at all? Something safety related like that should be considered under goodwill I reckon

I agree with carjos, but they may look at it that the horn has failed not the VSC, but the horn is there for safety too. Make a bit of noise or mention the the small claims court. Australian statutory warranty states that a product must be capable of performing the task it was designed to for a reasonable period of time.
Up to the judge to decide what percentage of a reasonable amount of time (or distance in this case) you got.

Get the Toyo part number and go to Ali express. Get three of them for $120 bucks all up roughly. Fit them yourself in about 60 minutes the first time, only special tools is a torx bit and a steering wheel puller. Replaced mine on the weekend - took me 1/2 hour. The chinese ones last half as long as the Toyo ones at a 10th of the price. I put a later model one in my daughters 07 ute for steering wheel controls and it was $37 delivered.

Try using the words "out of warranty repair", my old '05 model had the clockspring go before it became a recall item, toyota dealer quoted my around $800, rang back two days later after reading online that others had it repaired and asked if they had heard of doing it as an out of warranty repair. Right then and there she booked me in for the following week, $800 saved. Did annoy me that they were prepared to charge me that much money when they knew full well they could do it for free

My horn stopped working after Toyota repaired my clock spring. They blamed it on my aftermarket wiring, saying it was loose or dodgy but it all worked fine before. Is there any chance it was damaged when the clock spring was replaced?

My horn recently stopped working unless turning, I also have a VSC fault code that comes up now and then (hopefully related)

Hilux is a 2011 with 130K kms
I just had an out of warranty claim approved and a new clock spring is getting fitted tomorrow.
Thought I would share the info as more ammo for others in the same boat.

My airbag light has been staying on only sometimes. When I turn the car on next time it may be gone. Seems to be happening more often now though. Has anyone else's done this and the problem been the clock spring?

My airbag light has been coming on intermittently and I've been directed to this thread. Having read the first three pages there seems to be a common theme, Toyota are replacing some free of charge.
I've emailed Toyota directly and I'll let you know the response (if any) that I get.

So I have my first reply from Toyota

"Dear Scott,

Thank you for your recent email received by the Toyota Guest Experience Centre in regard to your 2008 Hilux and concerns about the SRS warning light illuminating.

The best course of action is to book your vehicle in for an inspection at your local Toyota dealership.

As your vehicle has exceeded it's warranty entitlements, you may need to cover any costs for diagnosis and repair.

Thank you for contacting Toyota and allowing us the opportunity to respond.

Regards

Michelle"

Has anyone got it done for free after receiving this message?

Thanks for posting Scott.
Many did get the airbag work done at Toyotas expense well out of warranty period however this may have been done during a limited and undefined time. When the issue first became promememt with loads of people experincing clock spring failure, toyota likely identified it as a PR disaster with potential fatalities resulting .
They did the recall on their back so as not to lose sale figures ... and because of the safety issue of course

It may still be a recall issue that they will front.
Check with DOTARS and let us know what they say

If its been replaced with a cheap knock off clock spring prior to your ownership its coming out of your pocket.

Either way get it booked in - a few hundred $ is nothing compared to living with a C5 frature

I've checked with Toyota and mine was not part of the recall, so it's entirely possible I'm on the original one. I doubt if the previous owner would have put a cheap one on if the suspension/ wheel/ tyre/ stereo upgrades are anything to go by. It seems $$$'s were no worries :)

Did you see the above post? 2016 mind you
Give it a crack - may also depend on which dealer or customer service rep you speak to
