Airbag clock spring

Postby hiluxdan on Thu, 03 Dec 2009 9:50 +0000

Had the truck in with the dealer for the 100 000k service last week(3 years 6 months old)and mentioned that the airbag light had been on for a few days. They told me if it's the clock spring that it's about $700 fitted, eeek! Because for km's I was just on warranty end but 6 months over on time, they would try to get part of the cost covered under warranty, cool.
They rang later in the day to say Toyota had covered the whole $700 beautiful! Just thought I'd let you's know if anyone else has issues.

Ive had airbag issues in the past, and during my investigations found out that the clock spring in the steering wheel (which basically looks just like a thin spring) was prone to breaking in the hilux. usually caused by excessive speed turning the steering wheel, or places doing wheel alignments moving the front tires back and forward. the spring gets itself caught and just breaks.. good to hear they covered it..

I know about this problem, but not on the hilux, :)

My old ute was a BA XR8 and twice I had to change the clock spring and the cost was $75 each from Ford

So it shows Toyota overcharge on spares. . . :x

had the same problem. Car was out of warranty for about 6months. Had no luck with toyota then went to DOTARS (Department of Transport and Road Safety) which is the federal body. They know of this fault and that toyota must replace it for the life of the vehicle. Went back to toyota and about 20 minutes later had Head office calling telling me it was all covered.

I had mine Replaced under warranty about a year ago, got it done at a dealership in parkes NSW on a Saturday and it took them about half an hour, the dealer ship close to home here in Canberra wanted it for the whole day just to look at it.

Good to know. Thanks for that.
Just had 110k km service and auto has major leak which needs attention. All this happened in under 10 000 km since last service which was warranty finish.

Surprise, surprise.

Generally, the manufacturer would warrant a true manuf defect even if it's past warranty. The dealers however, may not be too enthusiastic to really state a good case for you. In this case they may have but remember they make more if you pay versus instruction from Manuf to replace.
Let me know the final outcome.

Yer, same at my work we will get alot more money if it was retail because the manufacture pays shit all for you to replace the part

I would like to thank all you guys for posting this up. I have had the light of annoyance on for about 3 weeks now and yesterday after reading your posts, I rang my local purveyors of toyotrical merchandise here in un zud and after minimal haggling, they did the job gratis! Yay, and well done you lot!

Mine came on today after 110K+. Toyota have it booked in for Tuesday.. they better not try to give me the run around like the brakes issue, still Shite, and they tell me that they will not look at it until I remove the suspension and return it to normal hieght...

Cheers TOMUCH

My AB light has been on for a few weeks, McSumways old 05, 170K. A mate took it to Toyo in Phillip this morning, clock spring gone - $600 mates rates to replace!!
Will they cover a 5 year old vehicle?
