I had the seat seal issue earlier this year (January) and ended up taking it to a diesel specialist in Sydney to get fixed which cost $1400.

Today i was parked on a slight downhill and white smoke is back. poped the bonnet to see if anything was visible wrong and there was a lot of oil leaking from the turbo side of the rocker cover.

The rocker cover was removed to do the seat seal replacement.

So my issue is this has happened say 6-7 months after i took it to get fixed. I just checked my receipt and it says 3 months warranty on parts and workmanship.

I haven't had a chance to talk to them yet as they were closed today so will have to wait until Monday to do something about it.

I am posting to see if anyone knows how long a job like that should be warranted for and if they should/ have to fix it. any help or advice will be much appreciated.

The warranty given by the repairer/supplier is not necessarily the warranty required by law, which normally states that the repair/item last a reasonable time given the outlay (cost) and specifics of the repair/item itself.

It varies from state to state, but given how you overpaid for repairing the seat issue (seats cost less than $50 and replacing them should take less than 3 hours for an experienced workshop) then I'd say you were well and truly covered.

On the other hand however the rocker cover seal is fairly simple and durable, and notwithstanding rough workmanship should last well and truly the life of the engine.

I'd open communications with the repairer, not accept any dodging of liability from them and take matters up with your state's department of fair trading should you not have any joy. However remain civil and don't threaten them in your dealings with the repairer - you're more likely to put them in a helpful mood if you treat them professionally and with respect as everyone can make mistakes no matter how good you are

Thanks a lot for that info mate. At the time i rand around and that seemed like the going price, people either didnt know what i was talking about including toyota. or wanted over $1000 to do the job.

* does anyone know if a leaking seal will cause smoke at high revs under load ?

Also if it could cause an engine to rev up and slip on the clutch.

I'm booked in to get a new clutch on Wednesday, my car revs like wheels are spinning but doesn't go anywhere. Only if I really put my foot down. Is that defiantly the sign of needing a new clutch or could it be related to a leaking seal ?....

The seal won't but the built up blowby oil in the other components will. This oil takes a little time to clear. But if the leak is not fixed it will never clear.

So what your saying is a leaking seal could cause excessive white smoke even after the initial plume happens at start up. And when I get this seal leak fixed (again ) any oil built up will clear?

How long would you say is reasonable for any oil residue to clear if there was no seal leak ?

Yep spot on. A good 20 min trip would sort it.
