Unbreakable..Huh

this may not be the place to put this..sorry if it's wrong..my 'Lux has been at Toyota for the last 3 weeks..went in for a really annoying misfire that it's had for the last few weeks..as I suggested to them it dud coil packs x 2 (the front 2) they decided to do a compression test which i though might as well..turns out I now have to recondition both heads as they both have worn valve seals and guides..this car while only 2 years old has done just over 185,000 ks yes high ks I know...but most of these have been highway/ long haul living in Coffs working in Sydney and covering most of the state..most of this has been running on LPG..with some running on petrol..the truck is due back this week still waiting to see the repair bill..I owuld have thought that this is relatively low ks to require a top end rebuild..and I thought it should have been able to handle the LPG..apparently not..I'm now looking at fitting an upper cylinder lube kit to run while on LPG..just wondered if anyone else had come across this?..sorry for what seems a whinge..it's just a little frustrating..

Are the petrol motors classified as gas compatible :-)

In this day and age I would have thought they would be.

The V6 has soft valves to start with. Once you put harder valves and seats in should fix the problem.

repairs cost $3916.38 .including a service..3 days later it had a weird rattle and vibration ..engine fan was missing 1 nut another fell of when I touched it and the other 2 were loose causing the fan to spin through a very weird arc and all over the place..it's since been fixed..but the engine light came on again..pcv valve and cat converter..time to go to extractors and stainless exhaust..

I agree K-man, I don't bitch and moan about the price of diesel because at the end of the day I'm getting more run out of a tank. I'll never do the conversion for the amount of issues all these guys are having once gas powered...

Sorry for the late reply but as a mechanic with a lot of toyota experiece (not so much on V6 hilux) ,past experience with tojos is the heads do not like gas as they are a soft alloy head (80 series l/c and 100 bad for it) a moreys lubricator is the go but one repair is alot of fuel

most of this has been running on LPG

This is interesting LPG being a dry fuel I wonder if it has effected the valves etc?

I contemplated diesel, it is now cheaper than 95 RON.

The deal I received for my car was $3500 cheaper than the diesels. It will take a while to catch up on that.

Obviously diesel is better for many 4WD aspects such as river runs. I wouldn't class myself as a hard core off roader.
Having only one diesel pump at many service stations can be a pain at peak hour in the morning.

No doubt Ill be looking at the potential head problems which may out way the savings if a head overhaul is needed.

i always thought that an upper cylinder lube, drip fed into the intake was a must for running lpg....its cheap insurance considering how much you spend for the conversion, an extra 150 bux or whatever it is to fit some lube isnt much really......

id recommend it to anyone thinking of running lpg......

that being said ive been also told that all new toyotas run hardened valve seats standard now....would love to know if this is the case or not.....

sorry to hear bout your problems.....

Don't blame Toyota for fitting soft valves, there are many reasons why they do it- Cost-Noise-Vibration-reliability-weight and the list goes on.

It would be nice to think vehicle manufactures would cater for everyones needs but at the end of the day why increase the price of a Hilux (for better valves to suit LPG) by $20.00 for everyone when maybe only .00000001% of Hilux owner will need it.

Australia is the biggest user of LPG for automotive passenger vehicles in the world, hence why Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores have engines compatable with LPG and not many others do.

I think in general the Hilux lives upto it's name very well and does Toyota proud.

Common problem with fitting LPG to the V6's.

As mentioned, you need harder valves, and a lube kit is a must.

Not to mention switching to Petrol when doing heavy work.

Too much expense and risk. I wont be going down that road now.
For the sake of $20 I thought the hard core 4WD would have been fitted with the capacity of multiple fuel options.
Obviously the soft valve seats reduce that the level of pinging noise etc.

Thanks
