It's not the matter of $20.00, if you have a look at the big picture as follows...

These are estimates only.

350000 Hilux V6's have been sold from 2005 to 2009.

Out of those 350000 Hilux's sold maybe only 1700 will ever have LPG fitted by the owner.

Do they put the price of 350000 Hilux's up by $20.00 to cater for the 1700 people who want LPG or do the cater for the 348300 people who didn't.

It's to do with economics.

But we don't know the reason why they run soft valves....in their testing they might of found out by using softer valves they can extend the valve replacement time from 160000 kilometers to 390000 kilometers.

It might be they can save 30 grams in weight a valve by going to softer ones (24 valves at 30 grams = .720Kg of weight savings).

The softer valves may open quicker and the don't have to run as stronger valve springs helping fuel economy.

Toyota would do there market research and know spot on what people want out of a vehicle.

I run my business the same...I provide and sell what most people want, this is how I make money.

If I didn't want to make money I would provide and sell what most people don't want at a price they would want to pay.

Or if I wanted to make money I would increase the price of my services and products to cater for the minority of people and loose the majority of people....At the end of the day the minority of people wouldn't want to pay more for me to cater for there requirements so I would loose money.....I would be better putting my resources into suppling the majority.

It's not rocket science.

Learn to live with it.

After reading this I am glad I went for a d4d instead of a duel fuel. I had duel fuel on my 89 navara, and loved it, couldn't afford to run the thing on petrol.

To compare my old navara to the current v6 engine, I'd say Toyota's engine is a joke. I bought my navara in 05, it had run LPG since 89 with no upper cylinder Lube. The previous owner had done everything wrong that you could think of maintainance wise, and I copped a blown head gasket at 320000. When I had the head off I noticed the valves were in perfect condition (besides the rust pitting in one cyclinder from driving with a weeping head gasket) Bevore selling it about 2 months ago i did a compression check and at 370000km (i'd guess 90% on LPG) all pistons were perfectly in spec compression wise.

So for Toyota to sell an engine with rubbish components is just pathetic. If they are failing at less than 200k on LPG I suspect there wont be many V6s making the half-mil on petrol.

the 2.7 2tr-fe is gas compatible with hardened valves and seats, even has a factory gas injection system developed with appolo gas full toyota warranty

Its unreal how many people can't understand logic!

hodgo81 your Navara put out maybe 110Kw's compared to a Hilux V6 that puts out close to 200Kw's, your Navara maybe produced 230Nm of torque compared to 370 odd Nm's, your Navara might of gave 16 Lts per 100 kilometer on a good day compared to 10 to 11 Lts out of the Hilux V6 on a good day and the Navara V6 was gutless down low and harsh.

10 to 15 years ago to get 200Kw's out of a 4Lt engine was a lot of work and money and then you might only get 50 to 100000 kilometers before a total rebuild (think race engine), now we have reliable, economical and easy to drive engines that do it easily.

Why should they make their engine run on LPG, why not make it run on kero at the same time...I was realy pi#s*d off when I found out I couldn't run it on methanol as it would eat the alloy out.....how dare they do that.

Again don't blame Toyota.

There would have to be a reason why they chose not to run harder valves.

In the ideal world everything would be great.

I think to say "Toyota to sell an engine with rubbish components is just pathetic" is a bit harsh and un called for.

LMAO.... But probably a bit harse... valid points though....

I do believe they should have hardend valves for gas though... I always thought valves that could handle ULP could handle LPG....

No offence taken,
but like quinny said you would think that when car manufacturers had to upgrade valve quality to suit unleaded fuel 20 odd years ago (and LPG has been widely used for 20 odd years).
I wouldn't have thought they'd go backwards in engineering like that.
Plus I see alot of toyota taxis running on LPG, so why would they only make a few LPG compatible engines instead of most of their larger petrol engines.

And by the way I had the even more gutless 4cyl navara... so bump that down to 70kw  on a good day

I guess i also look at a vehicle for reliability/adaptability and long service life... not power. I was happy with a 2.4L engine running on LPG, but the car was too old and falling apart.
If any manufacturer offered a 4x4 extracab with gutless and long lasting engine that cost me less than $10/100km to run like my navara then I would have bought it. Instead I've got a D4D which uses about 20% more fuel than toyota quotes.

Hodgo81...Thank god for that, I'm still on your xmas card list...LOL

There are many reasons why they do things even if it doesn't seem logical.

I'm sure if you ran upper cylinder lube it will last ages.

Who said that? :)

I think my last same spark plug leads were on the 3Y and 4Y for 360000 kms plus. I remember people putting 253's in their hiluxs when Toyota went for a light engine to stop burying the front end in sand. The engineering usually has been thought out by Toyota and some mods effect the performance of the car in ways they hadn't thought.

I would think Toyota have other mods needed to meet Australian standards into the country?

Some people bag the IFS. I love it and I bet there's some things Toyota have thought of that others haven't worked out, like traction.

The same thinking is probably the same for the valve guides like you said. I think the 4.0L is around 175 KW. Its enough.

This is my first 08 Toyota Hilux, I was poking around looking at the under carriage when I noticed the diff welds where covered with black silicone or sicaflex, I can't recall if my last Holden Rodeo had that but I know it’s a sigh of a cover up for a bad weld.

Well if you bought the diesel chances are you would have had to spend $4000 on some new top quality Toyota injectors well before your wore your valves out…

My 07 V6 had lpg installed at 1200kms.
It now has 105k on the clock and the gas has been faultless.
Consumption averages 20l/100km's, exactly the same as on petrol.
Maybe i should take some weight out and slow down?

Thought I might bump this up.
I recently bought an 07 v6 that had been on lpg for the last 4 years (unsure of lpg km) now has 235k km.
I noticed a rough idle (on petrol and lpg) and rang the place who did the conversion to see if they had an idea.
Straight away he said the valve clearances need doing. I was hesitant, but after ruling out everything else I had a mechanic mate who works at Toyota help me out.
Every valve except for 2 was out of spec and we changed those 2 as well taking them all to the max clearance.
The shimless buckets are a stupid idea for an engine that only revs to 5.5k and cost just under $600 for all 24 at trade price.
As soon as I started the car up afterwards the idle was smooth instantly.
Speaking with the Foreman at the local toyota dealer he said tgat they had only done one before but they sent the heads off to be rebuilt Instead. (Poor customer probably got taken for a ride on that one).
I will be installing a flash lube kit shortly.
