New Starter Motor & Airbag Sensor Light on Order

Well, the water finally caught up with me and my Hilux.
If you haven’t seen the incident here it is again http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiQejYd3QUU&feature=related

My truck has been off the road since last Friday. Toyota has finally diagnosed the problem and it requires a new starter motor and airbag sensor. I’m very fortunate that this will be covered under warranty. The parts are in stock so I should be back on the road early next week.

Lesson One: Always check the depth of a bog hole even if you have driven it 20 times.

I know how you feel Wade. Book in next Tuesday to get the airbag sensor unit replaced after spending quality time in the toyota service waiting room yesterday, and now just starting to have problems with the starter motor. LESSON LEARNT - next time bring floaties

Hey senirb, so the HMAS Hilux had the same issues as i did. Very interesting, let me know when Toyota diagnose the issue. They have to run three seperate tests on the starter motor before they know what is exactley wrong. I won't get my starter motor till Friday, which means it's been off the road for 7 days. I hope you don't have the same luck as me. Let me know the outcome.

Cheers

Mate same thing happened to me although i didn't have to replace the starter just clean it out. Muddy water dried shorting out the solanoids on the starter so wasn't starting first time until i cleaned it. Malfunction light also came on shutting down the turbo so toyota had to reset it for me and told me all was good. They also said i was lucky cause none of it would be warrantee covered. You did well i reckon. Your interior back to normal yet?
Cheers

Bugger!! Ok new to 4wding i understand water crossing are not to be taken lightly no matter what the depth. If you do enter water that is above the bottom of the your door how much water does get in. If nothing goes wrong and you make it to the other side first attempt.

cheers

Its no problem James. Normally if you continue to move no water enters. I've been through water up to the leading edge of the bonnet without getting any in the cab. The problem is if you get stopped by something - as happened to Wade. The entry was steeper than expected and as a result he got stuck. It took about two-three minutes to hook up the recovery and pull him out.

Always check water crossings before entering.

Cool thank you for that mcsumway. I've only gone through water about 8-10 ins deep. Was just curious for when i do come up against deeper waters.

cheers

I have had water enter the cab through the doors, not the seals. The water gets in via the drain holes in the bottom of the doors and comes through the trim. A bugger on a long crossing.
Glad to hear you are sorted Wade.

Apart from pulling all the trimming off and taking the seats out after water gets in, you have to fully steam the only piece of carpet in the SR. There is a strip under each seat about 4 inches wide that just soaked it all up, pain in the ass definitely.:(

what are you classifying as a long crossing 10 m or more.
:( I have an SR with a full carpet flooring. Hoping I never get water in then.

cheers

Hey Wade, Took HMAS Hilux in, replaced new airbag sensor unit, no questions. Thank god for that. I was ready to demand a national recall on all hiluxes that were roadworthy and unroadworthy, all models even if they did not have an airbag sensor unit as I knew of alot of hiluxes with the same problem. Well, just you and I. And the starter motor seems to be fine. I did tell them about my concern and there reply was to send it away to be checked by a specialist(auto electrician) All has been good with the starter motor for the last few days so I will wait and see how it goes before i start demanding a recall on all toyotas with or without starter motors

Good stuff senirb, I finally have my Hilux back on the road. It turned out it was the centre airbag sensor which I believe is behind the steering column.
