194,000km Hilux: No Warranty says Stealership

Postby Loosey on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 3:19 +0000

Guys,

Today I find out that my injectors are out of spec...

1: +3.5
2: -0.4
3: -1.6
4: -2.4

I have only owned the car less then 1000km's/14days.

I was told when I bought the Lux that they were fine, asked for a printout and they said they didn't take one...

Do I have a foot to stand on? I looked up online and an NRMA website says that the statutory warranty dealers have to have for used cars is only good up until 160,000km's or 10years...

The reason I took the car in there was that when I parked my lux on a decline (nose down), after 1hr+ of standing it started rough and blew a hellovalot of white smoke for about a minute or so.

What are my options fella's?

Not f$&@ing happy Jan

Regards,
Aaron

So you bought the Lux at the same dealership 2nd Hand?

If so it should have come with a warranty as do most 2nd hand cars purchased from Dealers.

I bought a 2nd hand Hilux late last year and had my mechanic check it out. He came up with a few things which should have been fixed for roadworthy. Talked to the dealer who said bring it in for a look and we will consider it. I talked to my mechanic and decided for the $300 it was going to be to fix I would be better off getting my mechanic to fix and not let the dealer near it again.

Not the same for +$2000 injectors but the dealer warranty should cover it. Little suspicious they couldn't or didn't supply a print out of the injectors prior to sale.

Mate those injectors would of been f$@#&% when the car was sold to dealership, the previous owner more than likey knew they were on the way out and got out of the car quick smart!

So the dealership would of sold you a faulty hilux being faulty injectors, take it back and tell them you want them replaced and the fuel system cleaned out.
Make sure you go straight to the manager, if he says no that make some calls to someone a little higher...

Mt son bought a D40 Navara 2 weeks later the clutch went, it was second hand and I declined the aftermarket warranty for around 1200 extra.
Dealer didnt want to know about me, I made enquiries into the coverage of the warranty I declined and it did not cover it either. WE had to wear it and Im still annoyed about it 2 years later. Mate I would find half a dozen of the biggest baddest dudes you could find and walk into the dealership with them and ask for the manager and tell him you will be back to pick your car up when its repaired.

The clutch is a different issue though Kyle, clutches can go at any time depends on how you drive it!
Your son could of been doing circle work the night he bought it and f'ed the clutch, than go back to the dealer and say the clutch is gone, what are you going to do?
Not saying thats what happened just using it as an example!

Injectors dont go over night!

Check the paperwork in case there is any warranty provided independent of statutory warranties.

If they specifically said the injectors were fine then I think you have a case as that was part of the contract, but it's difficult to prove if you have no written evidence. If they said more general comments like "car is good" then really you are just buying a second hand car as is and you take the risk.

Yes fair emough but it would be unlikely that a clutch would go so quick, Its more likely the case that the clutch was showing significant signs of wear on their "work shop inspection", but they chose to ignore it.
More to the point it comes back to the dealer and how he cares about his market reputation.
I bought a 16ton UD tipper truck with 500 000ks It had a conditional warranty (major parts)on it. A month later the starter motor went. I rang them they said its not a major part, I went in there and said well as far as Im concerned not starting is pretty Fkng major, they suggested going halves in the 1500 part which I agreed to. They didnt have to do it.
As you say injectors were probably going for some time as the previous owner would probably been aware. Bastard :!:

Very hard to believe a dealer wouldn't have done their homework on the injectors mate. Being that it is a known issue with the Hilux of that age. For them to say they didn't have a print out is a little hard to swallow.
Make lots of noise mate. The old saying is true. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Don't let it go. Hassle hassle hassle everyday. Take it up the chain. Talk to consumer affairs. Make their life a misery and hope they come to the party, even if it is for the parts.

Probably sold it to you on a "form 8", I had the exact same thing happen to me! I found out the next morning my injectors were screwed, so I took it back a couple of days later and they didn't want to know me. Guess I wont be the only one in 2304 waking up the neighbours early in the morning!

As joe said i would check you paperwork, i know when i buy or sell a motorbike around the 3 major dealers in town they offer 3months or 500km warranty on dirt bikes 2nd hand. I dont see why a car from a dealer would be any different. Id double check and do some ringing around, even give fair trade a call

Ok now don't shoot the messenger but here's a relevant summary of the law in NSW (not sure about other states):
No warranty on commercial vehicles
No warranty on dual cabs/crew cabs/single cabs
No warranty past 160,000km
While we're at it - no warranty on caravans or trailers ( But I offer one 8-) )

Dealers don't check individual injectors or do print-outs (?) or service cars or check tyre pressures or kiss cars on the dashboard or have X-Ray vision into the bellhousing or intake manifold - or future - to see problems.

They wash 'em and sell 'em.

When they go to the extent of warming up the engine before you test drive it, I dare say they do know. I'm sure if you were to trade in a vehicle with dodgy injectors they would easily find out, particularly toyota dealers as they are well aware of the problem.

Yes it is a well known problem, but that doesn't mean they have to worry about it! There may be a loop hole and can get away with it, than when you come back saying I need new injectors and they can make another few hundred of then why not!

It's like taking your car in there for a service, getting it back with oil all over the bash plates and dirty hand marks all over the body! Do the service people know about it, of course they do, do they clean it up, no because they don't give a shit...

@Kyle: Read through that whole thread, told them it could be oil in the intercooler leaking back into the turbo (shook his head), said it could be the injector seats (shook his head), told me it was the +3.5 injector that could be leaking diesel to pool on the cylinder after i described the symptoms... They couldn't even replicate the problem after i clearly defined how they needed to test the car! They are f$@#&% hopeless!

@TDog: It honestly felt like i was educated the service manager on their own car! Unless he was just playing dumb, i'll be taking it up with the bloke who sold me the car, and see where i get with that.

@M.fuller: Yeah mate, that's exactly what he said to me, "form 8, no dealership warranty" to do with the kilometers the car has. (over 160,000)
Didn't know you lived in Mayfield, where abouts mate? (PM is fine)
Mine isn't loud on start-up, its pretty quiet actually, just the hill thing which i wanted them to check out.

Can anyone confirm that +3.5 is out of spec? If so i could push to have that one injector fixed and all the injectors reseated...

Thanks alot for all your input guys.
Aaron

Specs of +3.5 of injector whatever on a vehicle with nearly 200,000km on the clock, that is in reality, 2/3rds worn out... No loopholes... No warranty. Buy some new squirters. Sorry.
