Fuel filter changes got me thinking. I have only just bought mine and done about 5000km. Checked my service book and it has been to Toyota all its life so I went and bought a fuel filter and changed it today. At 117000km I have no idea if it had ever been changed. It was a bit discoloured but I feel better now I know its been changed. Mine will be changed every 10k plus I will keep a spare one with me at all times.

Yeah mines the D4D and I do it every 10,000 just for piece of mind it doesn't cost that much.
Just to check on the service department I pulled it out after the 40,000 service and it was changed so it gives me more confidence that they did everything else as well.

In my 2011 Hilux, same as many others, there was no fuel filter change on the service schedule.
The dealers all advised its only done when the light comes on.

Yep Toyota have decided the diesel fuel filter is a non service item for good reason not to risk damage or to save money ;)

Love to know what the good reason is Dave.

My unsubstantiated theory is that it is simply another facet of the no fuss, no thought, fixed/cut price servicing, long warranty, treat your car as kitchen appliance not a machine, don't think about it, don't care about it, turn it over regularly syndrome. And we will help you along by not giving a fat rat's what we do or don't do when it arrives at our revered door for attention.

The sad part about all this crap service is that the info which is available to Toyota techs is mind boggling. If the tech is switched on and enjoys the challenge, truly good stuff can be done. B/Hs apparent attitude, and what he shares with us is an excellent example. I had a mate who worked for a different brand who was similarly motivated, and what we learnt from him was wonderful.

Sadly, these people and this enthusiasm are not the norm, as Roo has pointed out.

The good reason is that new filters do not filter better than old filters. Actually new filters filter worse. A filter's condition is determined by its resistance to flow. When resistance to flow exceeds a predetermined level the light comes on and you change the filter. Changing more often will not offer superior protection.

Agree somewhat with outbackjoe, differential pressure is what is used on many systems to determine filter change requirement/intervals, that said, I change my filter periodically as I would prefer to do it in my driveway than on a bulldust highway.

Also, once I opened my filter to find the water float completely submerged in thick sludge, no way that sucker would have worked.

Cleanliness is key here, I remove the complete fuel filter assembly and open/clean/replace element with lint free rags in my shed then reinstall on vehicle.

Yeah that's right, whether it's your pool filter or the filter on a hilux or the filter on a multi million dollar piece of mining equipment, pressure determines the condition of the filter and whether it should be changed.

Spot on Joe !
Its nowt to do with cost either, as already said unless everything is kept scrupulously clean changing it can risk getting disturbed shite into the system.

The fuel filter thing, is about balance. Not to the right, and not to the left. A bit like Malcom Turnbull, really, down the middle of the road.
Fuel filters in the Hiluxes, and the late Isuzu vehicles, for that matter, do reach saturation point before that light comes on. 10,000km intervals is just being silly, and so is 80,000km intervals.
Middle of the road, middle of the road, middle of the road.
The Roo.

A simple way to explain how a diesel filter works.
http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4966843_di ... -work.html
There are six things that I would consider king, to a modern
CRD engine.
The MAF sensor, the filtration system, the fuel that you use, the engine oil that you use, a healthy cooling system, and a good diagnostic tool or access to one.
