tough luck about the engine - I think that different people can read things differently. When I read the Chip It info in the link you posted, a few things jumped out at me:
1. This is a new system 'pioneered' by Chip IT
2. More total volume of fuel is being put into the chamber - this will definitely add extra strain to the piston
3. Chip It state if you are looking for a performance mod that out-performs all other performance mods you have come to the right place'
4. Chip It state 'we can boast increased midrange torque figures of up to 50% for most vehicles'
5. The warranty is only for the Chip It system - there is no mention of manufacturer's warranty.
6. Chip It state '10ltrs of petrol will last approx100 litres of diesel' - more than 10% petrol (the system only comes on at half throttle) is a diesel engine!
7. The Chip It terms and conditions of sale and warranty state 'Customers should also check the vehicles warranty agreement terms and conditions before fitting any equipment to a vehicle to see how the item will affect their warranty' - in fact, all of the terms and conditions state that Chip It is not responsible for engine failure.
8. The Chip It terms and conditions state 'It is a legal requirement for CHIP IT to inform its customers that this modification is for racing or off-road use only and hat use on road is not allowed in some states or territories'.

I am not surprised that Toyota are not helpful. I am also not surprised that they never mentioned the chip. That is not their concern. I doubt that you ever asked them about it either. Your only hope (as far as I can see) is with Chip It but I doubt that they will be very helpful. There is nothing on their page which states that the engine won't blow up.

I know that this doesn't help you now - you probably didn't even read the terms and conditions. I know that I don't on most mods I have done. I guess this is a lesson for us all.

No the quoted price for a short motor is $3800 + gaskets & fitting etc or $12k for a new motor including fitting, I just got the quote from Wights Toyota in Traralgon

Short motor also doesn't have the head correct?

I didnt see the info first hand so i will not vouch for it, however it seemed to come from a reliable source.
i was told 13-14k new half price reduction..... price does seem to be more in line with a complete motor not a short motor.

Should include head.

I've always known a short motor to be the block & internals, no head.

Short Motor is block and internals, no head.

Long motor is short motor plus complete head assy without any manifolds or wiring.

WOW, nice 11 Page read and I feel somewhat informed...

FYI, I put a Chip in my 150 Series Prado D4D in 2010 and next service was taken aside by the service manager at my local Toyota dealership and warned that if I have any engine problems from then on they ''may not'' be covered under warranty. Scared the CR@P out of me. Sold it 2 1/2 years later, didn't have any problems though.

Note To Self: Don't do any modifications that may cross warranty into a Grey area, ask Toyota Service Department beforehand and if practical/possible ask them to do the installation to their specifications, like with a secondary Fuel Manager/Filter for the Diesel Engines...

Buying a Diesel SR5 in 6 months and this forum as been very helpful...

AJ, as long as you have the right flow rate of 100L per hour or more, there shouldn't be a problem with warranty. Racor and Cat are a much better filtration system then the genuine filter assembly is anyway.

Think about the stresses placed on the mechanical parts in each cylinder. The forces on each piston to rod through bearings to the crank. Toyota warrant those parts to handle those stresses. You make more power it means more heat and more stresses. You add 50% to those stresses it may last. But why is it toyotas when it doesn't.
Also like kickinback touched on there is so much that comes into the combustion process with burn speed and proper mixing of the fuel air mix and maintaining controlled burn. My iq is too low to understand and explain all the variables properly but you can't just give a motor more fuel and prey.
Good luck. But I think you need to look to others besides Toyota.

Well i'm finally done with the 07 hilux. From 100k to 120k i've had the water pump go, which i took on the chin as i hadn't had any problems with the lux in 100k. This was then followed by a leaking steering rack which i was told was due to my 'off roading'. To which i inform them my car had been on two day trips in six years but toyota said no to an out of warranty claim, i left it to slowly die as as the cost is huge. Now i've had the leaking number 1 cyclinder injector which has now been replaced. They told me it would be wise to change all 4 i said it would be wise for toyota to build a decent hilux again. I've now traded it in and not on another toyota as i wanted a car to go more than 100k without major problems and i just can't trust it anymore.

Hmmm.... Dare I say this. There are better utes around in the new vehicle market. Like the BT50 and the Isuzu D-Max.
I think the BT50 is better then the Ranger because of all those Torx bolts where as the BT50 is normal hex bolts. And the Ranger has those stupid front lower arms that will surely get damaged 4wding.
I do hate the design of the BT50's rear lights though, on the standard tray back.
Blow by is another problem that the 1KD-FTVs have. That's if you have the early designed copper seats before TMC/Denso coated them. The later models with the new seats, there shouldn't be a problem.
If you have a Hilux that is say, earlier than 2008, you should get those old seats replaced with the new coated seats.
If left, the sump screen can become blocked with carbon (hard as a rock bits of black) produced by the blow by gas, starving the engine of lubrication which takes out the block.
An engine rebuild costing about $16,000.00 to $22,000.00.
I hope for the next generation of Toyota diesel engines, that Toyota goes back to Hino designing them, as they designed the 1HD-FTE, the 5L-E, the 1KZs, and the 1HZs, etc, etc.... Toyota can engineer an excellent petrol engine like the 1GR-FE, but I don't know about diesel engines.
Note, Hino is a division of TMC.

Great thread to havecread, but having just bought a 2007, 2008 compliance plate, sr disel, im a little scare of whst i might havecstepped in!!

How do i find out or tell if my injectors havd been replaced forvtge "newer" ones, or if tge injector seals have been replaced bybthe new gel coated ones?

Feelmlike ive stepped from tge mazda fire into the toyota fire. Had a diesel cx7 engine go into limp mode then they found soot nd carbon had blocked oil pick up. Argued for weeks with mazda as warranty had ended 1 month before problem. Evntually they repaired under warranty, but tge day after i got it back, the
Turbo siezed, it too was eventually replacedunder warranty. Sold that to get back into reliable mr.toyo engines like my very first 2L. Shit!

There are a couple of things extra you need to consider to keep this generation of 1KD-FTVs healthy.
Check your feedback values regularly, especially over 80,000kms. The range for the feedback values are from -3.0mm3 to 3.0mm3.
Anything outside of those values, replace the four injectors, or as a set. A typical out of range reading is 4.1mm3 or -4.3mm3.
The other problem, blow by, is easy to keep an eye on. Every time you change out your engine oil, inspect your sump screen with an inspection camera. Just make sure that the whole screen is clear from that black carbon that blocks the sump screen if the seats have failed. If you do find carbon build up on your sump screen you will have to pull out the sump screen for cleaning and change out the seats or sheets.
If you don't do this the sump screen will become completely blocked which means no lubrication will be happening. No lubrication, no engine in a very short time.
The Roo.

Oh man! Am just about to buy a 2012 GXL Prado with the diesel motor. Done 37000km, should I buy it or not? I'm buying as Toyota is a great reliable car, is that not the case now? ?

Please give me an idea of what to do.
