Warranty claim declined broken c/v they didn't look at it!!!

Postby fourby4diesel on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 8:23 +0000

1.) broke r/h/f inner c/v
2.) dealer said it won't be covered because of modified suspension.
3.) I fitted a Repco shaft to get back on the road.
4.) took shaft to Toyota to put in a claim for it, it was declined, without even inspecting the vehicle, surely mr Toyota would want to know why it broke????
5.) I inspected further to find, my front diff sitting 40-50mm higher at the drivers side end, when compared to the passenger side end.
6.) anyone with basic understanding knows this would severly increase the c/v angles at the high side end, which broke!
And it would also help the other end as it reduces the c/v angles.
7.) what did I get when I told the dealer of my findings??? After I emailed photos???
Just threats of being charged for the time they spend, trying to get it covered, trying to find the problem.

Is this standard shit Toyota service?
I thought I diagnosed it for them....
Is anyone else's diff like this or is it level?
You can easily do a visual, and see how the inner, cups compare in height when lined up with the lower control arm mount bolts etc.

Piss poor!

I was 4x4ing, nothing extreme.
I didn't bend anything, they are cast iron brakets,
Mounted behind the bashplate, which is not damaged.
Jack S, are you sure u bent them? Cast brackets???
Maybe this is a problem with a batch of these........
New truck with a missmounted front diff....
How can it even be? Maybe I'm wrong.....
We will see........

I thought u were saying u bent stock ones.
Can't really bend cast iron.
MR ones would probably be manufactured from mild steel.

Well this Toyota dealer actually looked at it, they said something is really wrong with your vehicle.
I said " no shit" they can see the diff really high at the drivers side.
It keeps coming back to the modified suspension.....
Just forget about the F$&kd diff angle.
We are waiting for an answer from Japan, I'm not sure what they are going to say.....
Maybe, why the f$&k is the diff like that? We can't tell from here!
Anyway waiting waiting.....

Well, at this stage all the others i have looked at are level within 5mm.
If it is out, there is a good chance you have, or could break the inner c/v.

i have had the same thing. it is your suspension that caused the issue, at some stage you would have had your right wheel hanging down on the suspension when powering and the cv is so close to coming out it climbs out of it case and forced the diff up bending the cast bracket. I know i have bent 2 cast brackets now and desided to make my own out of angle iron than mounts at the front and the back cross member instead of just at the front. this gives it a lot more strength. Also just a not i did not use any rubber mounts for the bracket i made and i dont get any viabration from this as i thought i might.
I would be fixing the diff angle asap because other wise you are going to break another cv. well they dont really break they just climb out of the housing and pop the bearings off the cv. the problem is you bend your shocks / strut every time as well and that is a real pain in the ar** especialy when there bilstiens. and not cheep

Now your talking, I had a suspicion it may be like this,
Bent cast? Mmm.... So I need to try another bracket!
I know about the angle, I can't go offroad till it's fixed!

yer the cast brackets bend if you get another and sit them next to each other you will see the difference. eather get a new one or an after market one or make your own if you handy. you just need some angle iron about 50 x 50 and a grinder and drill. I was about to take a pic of mine but would have to remove bash plate. I have ran tha angle iron from the bottom of the front cross member back to the top of the back cross member and then this puts it on the same angle as the 2 mounting holls on the diff. If you look you will see the diff has a section with 2 threaded holls that is not horrizontal just on a slight angle. well with out getting in to to much detail i hope this may be of some assistance. PS i have not brocken any more cvs.
and last note you will probably find that the left side bracket is bent in the oppisite direction but this is a good thing as it puts that side lower. no need now to do a diff drop on that side. just get it level with a made bracket on the right and the whole diff will be sitting lower. mine is about 15mm lower than others i have looked at.

You know what's going on, the passenger side is at about the standard height, I have compared to others,
I believe the drivers side mount may be too flimsy for offroad, especially once there is even slightly extra travel involved.

3 years ago I was told my bent diff mount was the first Toyota had seen.
I did the full lock, full suspension, full throttle trick and tore the drivers side cv apart, plus the strut.
It cost me $2200 with declined warranty due to a 3 inch lift.
when i picked it up i asked the dealer to take me for a test drive and show me iit was fine.
He put it in 4wd in the toyota carpark, bbooted it and it did it again.
Turns out the diff mount was bent and they didnt notice.
So they fixed it again and picked up the tab for the CV, strut and diff mount.
I always thought they were bullshitting about the bent mount being a 1 off.

I think it's more to do with the position it's in when it is tightened up.
But yes plenty of b.s going on at TOYOTA.
