Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: I bought an 07 (with 46K kms) privately which was just running out of dealership warranty and purchased an extended warranty through Toyota. Car had been serviced by both Toyota and Mitsubishi and even missed it's 40K service by 6k km and they still assured me this would be fine when I bought the Toyota Extra Care Warranty (TECW). At 60K the gearbox developed an issue. Box was stripped down by Toyota dealer who recommended a replacement box or a major rebuild BUT TECW challenged my local dealer's diagnosis and said they would only pay for the synchro in first and then when (if) the rest fail they would then fix it. A big verbal battle ensued where TECW saying to me on the phone at one point "some of these dealers get lazy and just order new gearboxes rather than fixing them," but after one month my gearbox was finally replaced. Lucky I didn't need my car for that time as no courtesy car was given during that whole time.

Postscript: My car was 2nd hand so who knows what the previous owner did. Yours is brand new and you will no doubt nurture it like your own child. I don't think this gearbox issue I had is endemic otherwise it would be of constant discussion on this forum. I guess I just got a bad apple but my warranty has paid for itself. Sorry to babble on but a mudflap is worth $113 plus gst so God only knows what the gearbox is worth??

New Hilux - Do I take up the extended warranty?

Postby KTM525EXC on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 4:55 +0000

After reading these storys is makes ya feel like extended warranty is worth the extra. Is the extended warranty a fixed price or does it increase the more kms you have done before taking out the policy?

Troy, purchased my car second hand with 58,000km and had only 6 months factory warranty left so bought TECW for 3 years. You can either choose 1, 2, or 3 years.

Got the 3 years for about $1,400, I think the price between 1 and 3 was about 30% extra.

Don’t know how it is rated mate, give Toyota finance / insurance a call

Took out xtra care warranty on my last lux. 99 Xtracab. I didnt do too much to it to start off with as I was worried about voiding the warranty. I ended up lifting it and doing the basics with tyres, bar work, batteries, tanks etc.
The original suspension failed twice and was replaced no questions asked. After a huge simpson trip I somehow impacted n exhaust valve in the head and drove home with a very lumpy sounding motor. Total top end repair at Toyota cost, no dramas. Then finally 1 week before the warranty ran out the transfer case seals started to weep so i tried my luck and got the case stripped down checked and put back in with no issues.
I think the key was keeping the services up to date with Toyota service and not going overboard with the mods. Like an insurance company if they can find that a mod has caused or added to the damage you are on your own.
I now have an 05 SR D4D and if I bought it new it would have been nice to have the warranty. 150ks and I have had to replace the clutch, front drive output seals, entire steering rack and now the waterpump is spraying a nice pink shade under the bonet. none of my mods can be related to the issues and the service history is good so the Xtra care warranty would have paid for itself.
Personally id get the xtra care but id read the fine print just in case they have tightened it up since I last had it.

I have the extended warranty. SO far they have paid for (without issue) rebuilding the rear diff, new bearings throughout ($1500+), and they are about to replace my gearbox with a brand new one, rather than strip and rebuild the existing one ($3K+). So yeah definately worth the extra outlay initially. But it does pay to have a god releationship with the service manager and service department. I do (now) and it sure helps alot.

Hi All,

I have read this thread and searched the forum for peoples thoughts on the extended warranty, does any one have any up to date opinions on if this is still worth it or not.

I am just about to sign on a new D4D Hilux and would like some help.

Cheers Tony

Maybe that's what it's all about, well at least I have 3 years to maybe change my mind if they will let you take it out later in the life of your car.

Thanks for your input.

I have just moved to Perth, and the first service here in Rockingham they picked up I have a leaking Power Steering rack ($4k from toyota supply only)
Toyo extra care picked up the bill without a whimper.

So for my $1200 outlay baaack in 2008, Toyota have forked out approx $8.5k without any questions.

Is it worth it? you bet ya  8-)

If you are close to or within 3 years old have a chat to Toyota as they will still honor warrantee claims on a merit basis, worth a try

In my last hilux, 05 single cab 4.0 v6 4x4. The starter motor went at 105000km. Toyota fixed it even tho it was just out of warranty. Then from there to 160000km when I sold it, I broke a front axel, throw out bearing squeeked really loud, the cd player stopes playing CDs, power steering pump leaked oil, the real main seal leaked a heaps of oil, the gear stick got really really loose. All fixed at my expense. I have since sold it to my father who has had to put a new clutch in, then the head went. I think he said it cost about 4 grand for the head and 1500 for the clutch, then the radiator went. This was all before 200000km and would have been fixed under extended warranty if I had one, just ordered a new td and I got the extended Warranty, not gunna cop that again, in toyotas defense I did flog the crap out of it, my only mods were exhaust and 31x10.5's

i made sure that my latest Hilux(#8) came with a factory 5 year warranty, when i bought it they were advertising 5 year warranties on Corollas so i said i will have one of those on the Hilux thanks and after a bit of shuffling between the dealer and toyota they approved it, cost nothing but for 60k they should be free

What is the normal warranty period that you get as standard is it 3 yrs on 60, 000km?

If so how long does the extra - extended warranty cover you until ?

i paid $1200 to get an extra 3 years or 150,000 km - Factory Warranty, And you dont need to take it to "the dealer" for the 6 years. As long as its serviced and stamped by an accredited mech.

In my opinion its cheap insurance knowing that i "should" have hassle free motoring for the next 6 years.

Each to their own I guess.

I turn my cars over every 3 years and don't do 60k kms so I never buy extended warranties but of course every time they try and sell it to me.
