cracked piston

Postby k_san on Thu, 23 Jun 2011 3:13 +0000

Hi everyone

Heres an interesting situ, a friend of a friend was recently driving his late 05 Hilux (the new model) around (i assume somewhere near the city) when he noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine. He pulled over to investigate, figured out pretty quickly that something internally wasnt right..

After getting the hilux towed to his relatives workshop, they pulled the motor apart to see that the number 4 piston had cracked across the crown and down one side of the piston only - the other side of the piston was still good..

His odo showed 180 000 odd kms...but when they ran the scan on the ECU it showed that it had 370 000km up, which is a hell of a lot of km for an 05 model anything...

He got it priced up to repair the motor at the mechanic - came to arond 9 - 10 k, which hes not real happy about...but cant do much about that..

Just wondering if anyone had heard of this before? Or what could have caused the cracked piston?

First thing to happen is injectors off to be tested, when i hear of the results of this ill post it up..

Cheers

Kev

Looking at just over 10 grand for a long motor and just over 4 grand for a short motor.

I think you should chase up with Consumer Affairs where you bought this hilux from?

Because if the odometer is saying one thing and you can prove the scan guage is saying something welse, then ther is a 100% case there for legal action against the place of purchase.

You can say that if you knew it had that many kays, you would either have reconsidered the purchase or offered to buy it cheaper knowing the risk of a possible maintanance issues with a vehicle with that many km's.......

doesnt hurt to make a phone call and inquire.

Apparently there was some mention about something to do with the type of fuel to use? I assume that the mechanic may have been implying that some fuels are better to use than others? I only ever use BP ultimate diesel, but thats because the 2 closest servos are BP, dont know if any other brands are worse or better?

Im not electrically minded, but because the odo is electrical, is it possible for it to be wound back or reset?

What would be the chances of the ECU making an error as massive as that?

yes you can adjust the electronic Odometer.

Any form of odometer adjustment is highly illegal.

Legal action for sure. KM’s are required to be noted on transfer papers at least in WA so it shouldn’t be too hard to work out who did the fibbing. May be the culprit will take back the broken car & offer money back, who knows...

Well ill make the recommendation to at least consider legal action to him then, sounds reasonable!

Pretty unlucky hey, cracked piston...but even if it did have 370 000km up - surely they are built to run longer than that?

Would love to hear the actual cause for the piston cracking, does the car run any chips/exhaust or other mods at all? eg, bigger tyres lift or was it all standard?

Nah as far as i know its factory, if anything it may be running some bigger tyres..

What makes a piston crack? Faulty injectors? Leaning out?

Assume you are talking about the D4D?
Thrashing it mercilessly,i.e. redlining the tacho all the time, especially when cold, over-revving by downshifting at high speed, lack of oil changes.

water ingress will do it..

one of my mates did it on the weekend in his GQ.. water crossing too fast, no snorkel, sucked a tonne into the air intake down into the motor and has cracked 2 cylinders.. he had to be flat towed home..

he didnt even make it right through the water.. it died on him before he got to the other side..

likely to be faulty injector induced knocking that cracked the piston

An update!

The injectors went away to get tested, all 4 injectors are wrecked due to water contaminated fuel...number 3 and 4 injector outer casings were cracked AND number 3 and 4 pistons were cracked across the crown and down the side.

Numbers 1 and 2 injectors and pistons are wrecked, but not cracked up like the others..

The fuel sender unit, fuel rail, fuel pump and fuel lines are totalled and have to be replaced, the fuel tank requires a full flush..

All up, cost of parts and labour has now hit around the 11 grand mark.

I advised him of motors that are for sale (on this forum etc) and the only problem is that he needs his car for work - no car no work...i still reckon it could be just as or even quicker to find a motor and do a swap but i guess he takes comfort in the fact that hell have a rebuilt motor - as he is doing the lot (bearings etc) while hes at it...so 11k probably isnt that bad

Just rams home the definite advantages of installing a secondary fuel filter / water separator to be safe! Be something ill look into in the very near future!

After today I woulnd't be so convinced. Been running a secondary filter in mine for most of its life. Diesel from BP only, and at 180Km's my 06 D4d just cracked a piston judging by the horrific sounds coming from the motor. Toyota will rip the motor out asap to get a verdict. Not too thrilled to say the least.

Couldn't have happned at a worse time, right in the middle of my busiest time at work, doing 1500kms+ a week, and now I have no truck!

K_san, any idea on how much of that 11K was a labour component?

I've decided to pull the motor out myself and get a family friend (ex toyo mech) to check it out and fix it if possible.

If theres bigger issues inside, a fully recon'd motor over here is around 4-5K. A day of my time to swap them over and some $$$ to get the computer re-mapped by Toyota.

Hopefully not going tot cost me anywhere near 10K... :?

Anyone done this themselves???
