I only own basic tools... so the success of that option would be limited i feel :( Also I had a look and cant see where to put it without having to drill holes in the firewall or something.

Drilling holes into your car isn't the end of the world, but you'll probably need a nutsert tool if mounting a filter. I was lucky to borrow a nutsert tool. Also not sure on your plans for a dual batt but don't reduce your options on this mod

yeah I'd be happy to get into it with the proper tools...but i don't have access to a Nutsert etc...at the moment it's looking like just biting the bullet and ordering the FM bracket.

Finally finished installing my 445r. Here are the pics of the install;

not too sure on how the vacuum guage works...it's just filled up about halfway with diesel? That's it.

Also I was pretty shocked at the amount of crap in the diesel I was getting through the system. When I primed the 445 I let the first 1L or so empty out the drain plug just to flush it a bit, and there was quite a few little black particles in there. And tiny bit of crap that looked like silt?? no massive amounts but enough to make me concerned.

Not sure if this crap that was on the inside of the new fuel hose, shit in fuel tank or just plain old dirty diesel? :S pretty glad I've got twice the protection now though! The last tank was BP Ultimate, might fill up with caltex next time and see what that comes through like.

Still have to run the wires and install the light/buzzer combo. Also does anyone know where I can get more of those fuel hose "spacer" type clips?

Good stuff. Yeh my vac gauge has a bit of diesel in it. Not sure if I'm going to worry about it? I was thinking of temporarily blocking the hoses and cracking the nut on the gauge and draining it. Are you putting the buzzer in? I like the little beep every time I fire up. Makes it sounds like more of a truck.

yeah i think they're meant to fill up with diesel...? not sure what happens from there though!? i'll just see what happens over the next 15-20,000 km's and see if it moves!

Yep, going to put the buzzer in asap. i've got the harness there ready to go, just need to suss out where the grommet in the firewall is and find the time to do it!

The gromet is right behing where you have mounted yours on the firewall behind the glove box. All I do to get thru it is get a long phillips head screw driver, tape the wire to the end of it, force it through from the engine bay, go reach under the glove box, undo tape, pull wire through and pull back screw driver from the engine bay. I have several wires running through that grommet, it's kind of like Dr Who's tardis as it just keeps expanding. You will have to use a bit of force though. Make sure you rap that buzzer in some tape to deaden the sound a bit if you haven't already.

ahhh awesome, thanks for that! yep will be certain to do that as well.

Did you have to pull half the dash apart to get the wire from the passenger side over to the driver side kick panel with all the switches etc?

No. To get the wire through to there I know of two ways.

1) This one does not require further dismantling but can be tricky. You;ll have to get into the footwell of the front passenger side as much you can and try to thread the wire up over the centre hump in the floor panel and into the driver side footwell. There is a cavity of sorts up towards the firewall in there.

alternatively

2) Remove the panel where the cigarette lighter is by simply putting in a big flat head screw driver on one side and popping it out. Caution here as it is easy to mark your plastics (your car looks newer than mine so you might care more than me). So either put some tape around the end of the crew driver or I have seen a tool made of plastic, sort of like mini tyre lever, which you might be able to buy?? Once popped it will come forward a few inches as the wiring in there has a bit of slack in it. SImply thread your wire across.

I have done both ways. The first way might be assisted by using a piece of fencing wire (or similar) and taping the electric wire to it. However I didn't have to do this, maybe I got lucky

One last note if you do manage to do it the first way maybe consider putting a piece of tough string through with a 1m or so coiled up at each end, so when you wire up your next switch in the dash (spotties, compressor, etc) it will make getting the cable across easy. Electricians do this in wall cavities of houses making it easy to get cable through so it should work in the auto electrical environment.

Runs fine on highway ect but is starved of fuel loses power every do often?

sounds like its losing pressure and sucking in air somewhere mate!! i'd take off all hoses to and from the unit and make sure the connection is 100% first.

ditto to WW, ive got the fuel manager too. works fine for me, didnt do anything fancy.

didnt even fill it with fuel. just primed it until i couldnt prime it anymore and wa-lah

could also be sucking air if your filter isnt assembled tight (or correctly) - ie its loose or misaligned.

Just wondering if any one has done a water detection test with the the Racor filter and water detection kit? I have the water detection kit Part no. RK30880E. I tested the probe switch that's inside the bowl buy creating a circuit on the two pins with a wire and the light on my dash came on. I than tried putting the probe switch in a glass of water and got nothing... I thought this would mimic being inside the bowl and would have set it of for sure?? Thoughts?

Yep i have done it, and it should most deffinately set it off if you stick it in a glass of water.

I would recheck the way you have set it up wiring wise and retest it until it comes on before installing it...

Hook up the probe to your buzzer and test it by wiring it straight to the battery terminals to make sure it works at that point in time, then check the ignition circuit your tapping into to make sure that works aswell.

A 12v test light would help you diagnose this too, 12 buks from supercheap and useful for millions of things 12 v wiring related :!:

Had a go at hooking it up to the battery and same result.. Put it in water and got nothing, as soon as i put the crocodile clips on the two prongs the light and buzzer go off strait away. I'm starting to think I have a faulty unit. I'll buy another one and try again. cheers

Hey guys,

Have just read this thread from start to finish. Not sure if this has been asked already but I couldn’t see it.

I believe the facelift hiluxs have an audible buzzer that detetcts water in the filter. Is this correct?

I’m looking at getting a Fuel Manager pre filter with either a 10 filter (as that seems to be the consensus) and am wondering if wiring up the audible buzzer is necessary seeing as its already on the stock OEM filter. I guess there are benefits in knowing before it hits the OEM filter, but just wanted to see what you thought.

Just confirming is everyone’s view that a FM 10 micron pre filter is the best option in protection without blocking /starving the fuel pump/engine of diesel?
