Has anyone found the wiring kit for the fm100 at a decent price or a DIY alarm for detecting water

Griffin has a cheap water alarm. The probe is 1/2"SAE threads, standard size for most filter bowls. $38 USD

Another option for the Racor filters is Griffin filters. http://griffinfilter.com/

They appear to be the same thing only at a cheaper price point. Racor 445R is $192 USD from discountracor.com, the equivelent Griffin GP170 is $129 USD from http://www.dieselfiltersdirect.com/

Replacement elements are 10% cheaper ($2 USD) than the Racor and performance specs are equal. Check it out.

Depends on where you put the fuel filter. I can remove the oil filter with the fuel filter in place.

Cheers

Hi all, I have been looking at you thread on diesel fuel pre filters for my 2008 auto DC SR5. (Heaps of info thanks). I am leaning towards the RACOR 445R with water sensor.
I was wondering does the OEM warning system have an audible alarm and if so has anyone tried / managed to integrate the pre filter water alarm with the OEM system instead of separate, my thoughts were just add a separate warning light to ID which filter has contaminates and use the existing alarm.

Thanks (I hope)

Nice idea but if the pre-filter lets water through to the OEM then the warning will let you know. Check the glass bowl on the pre-filter REGULARLY to avoid any getting through. I always check the glass bowl after filling with fuel (a few k's down the road) and every time the bonnet goes up.

Water from the bowser is a real problem but it (the water) will be the first thing to go into the pre-filter since water goes to the bottom of the fuel tank, hence first out of the tank. Check early and often. ;) And NEVER fill at a bowser where there is a tanker filling the ground tanks at the servo (or if you know one was there recently). ;)

boxhead could tell you for sure, but as far as I know they do. At least the later models do. Check your owner's manual and if it mentions an audible fuel alarm... then you have one. If you open the bonnet and check for wires into the top of your OEM filter then you probably have an alarm (at least a visual).

A visual check of the glass bowl is the best check, belts and braces approach. ;)

I would keep the oem one in place and install a seperate buzzer / light like this ...

on the dash somewhere. That way you know which filter has the water in it...

If you are out on the back blocks, you should check your engine oil level, your fuel filter bowl, and for anything loose, every day, first thing before you start up.
This is part of the unwritten laws of travelling the outback of Australia.
Also, check your tyres and suspension.
It only takes about five minutes.
The other important unwritten law, is to not go past another travelling vehicle on a dirt track doing speed, so just slow down, as there is nothing worse then a broken windscreen on a dusty track.
The Roo.
Passing through country and seeing country are two different things.

I am currently running a 2 micron pre filter on my d4d. After reading forums this has made we worried about blowing up my injector pump. Should I be running a 30micron minimum?

About to buy one of the fuel manager kits off eBay , there is some pictures in this thread next to the dual battery but there is a kit you can purchase with a bracket for the drivers side. Is there enough room to easily change the filter and see the water bowl when you install it next to the dual battery or would the drivers side be easier? Next to the dual battery seems tight but it's shorter lines to run which I thought might be why people have that.

Seems mega risky to run two fuel lines across the back of the engine where there are hot water pipes and metal bits to catch on... Plumbing it right next to the oem one is by far the most logical choice even if you have a dual battery in place - just make it fit

Yeah I guess, just seems real tight and worried about not being able to see the bowl anyway, have to try find someone with one installed to have a look.
