Hi all,

i was looking to put a water trap on my hilux and prado and i was wondering if anyone had heard of any particular one that is better then the another.

I want just a water trap with no filter, as i don't want to cause any problems with restrictions etc.

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So has anyone fitted the product from Responsive Engineering called Water Watch, i think it looks the better out of the two and the description of it seems to do what i am looking for, just wanted to get some feedback before i spent the money thats all.

I think it sounds like good insurance in comparison to what i have heard you can spend if you get any water in your vehicle.

I couldn't see anything in that link about Denco, but i could of missed it.

I don't want to use a Delphi filter as i don't want to create a restriction within the fuel system.
I just want to use a water trap so i will have no problems with warranty etc.

So has anyone had any dealings with this water watch system, as i am quite interested in it.

That is my photo on their site.(red truck with red bracket I made up) I gave them the ok to use it.

Well i thought i would let you know that i have decided to buy a water watch, i rang and spoke to the guys at Responsive Engineering about it and i am very happy with the way it is supposed to work, and they gave me a contact of a distributor in my area that i can get one from and they can fit it for me too.
Its getting fitted later on in the week, so i will take some pics to show you all.

They are a good system and cheap insurance. I had to run my tank down to the fuel light a few month ago when I misjudged stops between fuel stations. A few days later I checked the glass bowl and found a quite a few water bubbles had collected at the bottom of the trap. I then checked the factory water sedimeter and found not a drop.

dont forget you could always save some money and do my mod..

Ive got to give your mod a run Steve.
I run a very basic water trap.. With a glass bowl.
Serviced my hilux for the first time today as she is 110000ks old now..
I have changed servos and this is the first time I copped a dose of bad medicine..

So has anyone had a 'water watch' unit fitted for a good period of time? I'm looking at buying some sort of pre warning/filter/separator, and I'm interested in any unbiased opinion on this particular unit.

Also, if any one has fitted a stanadyne system, any info/opinion would be appreciated too! I spoke to berrima diesel and this is the unit they currently recommend/sell, however they do not supply it with an alarm/buzzer etc.

I'm not too worried about spending a few dollars, but in return I want sure fire protection!

I have 2 genuine Toyota fuel filters inline and also have done Steve's mod as well which is on the first inline filter, all up it cost me about $150-$180 and even if my hearing gets that bad I still have a second filter to save me from trouble.
I also asked a Diesel specialist about it and he said that he could not see anything wrong with it, and that our Hilux pumps can more than cope with 2 filters as long as you don't get carried away with the size of them.

I have had water watch for 2 years now.
Whilst I have never had a tank of water that has alerted the unit I reckon it's a good system.

Every few months a few bubbles of water and other crap appear in the glass which I drain out.
No water makes it to the primary filter.

It really depends what you want.
Water is a killer for modern diesels, this system alerts you before in enters the engine.

If you get crappy fuel from dodgy servos with algae etc a secondary filter will help combat that.

The water watch system doesn't affect your warranty either. I got mine installed by my local toyo dealer and I have it in writing that my warranty wouldn't be effected.
Can't speak for the secondary filter but if you injectors crap themselves because they were flow restricted maybe Toyota could blame the filter?

Some of the delphi style filters have a water sensor in them, perhaps you could use one of them and wire it in series with the original toyota one then add stev9r's piezo mod.

I cant see how toyota can blame the additional filter when the original toyota one only 'supposedly' needs changing once its blocked and the light comes on.

I have the Delphi with the water sensor and have wired it to a bright red LED, in the middle of the dash. I also have Steve9r's buzzer mod on the original water sensor, both work perfect,

A 2nd filter upstream of the factory filter could void the warranty. If it blocks up or even becomes slightly blocked it could cavitate the injector pump due to the extra restriction. Toyota will blame anything to void warranty.
Personally, I run a water trap similar to the water watch one but it doesn't have a sensor, just a drain tap. got it from the local diesel service place, cost about $100 from memory.

I sell a few of the water watch systems to a local Toyota dealer who sells hiluxes etc to the mining industry and they insist on installing the system so they must be well worth while and a cheap insurance policy.
