Replacing injectors in 06 diesel.

Postby jumbo 4x4 on Tue, 29 Jun 2010 6:53 +0000

Well what I've been dreading has finally happend  check engine light came on a few days ago and Lux going ok just a little rough at idle it was a couple of days before I could get access to the trusty snap on scan tool by that time the light went out so checked the ecu and yep faulty injector code stored ok no biggy I thought maybe a glitch or hiccup in the system but back of my mind dirty fuel alarms ringing.A few days later back on :( ok now it is time to start chasing the problem lucky for me a mate was going to buy a snap on Lab Scope later this year so we just pushed it forward a bit(We are now officially on Snap-On's christmas card list :D ) Over the last 2 days we've been tracking down the faulty injector/s and have come up with 2 and 3 are in pretty bad condition with 4 in specs but just and 1 perfect so planning on replacing 2&3 "keep an eye on what 4 is doing via the lab scope so we can build up a data base on whats good ok and not.

Just a couple of questions for you guys out there
1 What's involved in getting the injectors out,we have done a few non common rail ones in the past and heaps of petrol ones but would like to know of anything specific relating to the Hilux D4D.Anything that we need to take extra notice of etc. Am having some trouble getting hold of the factory manual for it have a couple of leads that as yet haven't borne fruit but am hopeful.

2 Where is the best place to get injectors rather than factory (Quoted $975 ea) as the Lux is out of warranty it's all coming out of my own pocket so anythig saved can go back into mods.

Hi Jumbo,

I have an 06 model with only 36 000 on the clock and got an knock in it early this year. I had it to a dealer 4 times before they admitted that there was something wrong with it but they did replace the injectors under warranty. I think the fact that it only had 30 000kms when it started was probably my saving grace. I believe that they put Denso injectors in it. I have spoken to a diesel specialist, Diesel Australia in Brisbane, and they mentioned that they supply Toyota with the replacement (warranty) injectors. I can't give you a part number or model number though. The injectors for my vehicle came from Diesel Specialists Pty Ltd, also in Brisbane but all done through the dealer.

Mine still makes a bit of a rattle even though it has had all of the injectors replaced. I have had it to 2 dealers and both say there is nothing wrong with it and they are more noisy now. I am planning to take a new one for a test drive and see if there is a major difference between a new one and mine.

The only thing I know about replacing them is that the intercooler has to come off and that the injector lines should be done at the same time as they seat into the injector. The compensation codes for each injector have to be put into the ECU as well.

Hope this helps and it will be interesting to hear your outcome.

Cheers,

CJ

Jumbo,

To find out how to remove injectors on the 1KD follow the link below -

http://www.vehiclemods.net.au/docs/manual/repair2/html/frame_rm0000014fz000x.html

Just to let you know a dealer bulletin came out last month that details a bunch of other "non re-usable parts" that need to be replaced on common rail engines when under going warranty/repairs to the fuel systems.

Here is a list of the items that need replacing along with the injector -

-Nozzle Holder Seals
-Nozzle Holder Gaskets
-Cylinder Head Cover Gaskets
-Injector Pipe/s (Note: only one injector pipe per injector replaced, not all of them, only as many as needed)
-Injector O-ring
-Injector Nozzle Seat
-Injector return pipe gasket
-Injector Clamp Bolt Washer
-Intake Gaskets (i.e.thottle body, EGR etc as needed, refer to workshop manual)

you could always try - http://www.toyodiy.com for a list of associated parts and their respective part numbers.

Thanks for the info guys big help there.
36 000 on an 06 I'd like to think the dealer would warrant that too glad to see they did.

Well we dove head first into it last night a couple of hours later no more rough idle no more rattle and best of all I got the low down torque back :D No major headaches, not sure if we were just lucky or our expert planning, the latter me thinks  In fact it was probally one of the easiest injector changes I've done in a long time.Very straight foward just remember to keep everything clean and block off the hoses and lines.
It's amazing how you don't really notice the difference in grunt as you gradually loose power over time what a change  .Done just over 200 ks since the change and all good so far.The learning expierience was in-valuable not to mention the $$$$ with what It cost me compared to putting it into a dealer I've still got enough left over to go suspension and L/R tank.

Also if anyone out there needs scan tool or diagnostic work done in Sydney drop me a pm and I'll put you in touch with guy with the gear

Cheers Jumbo

Congratulations on fixing your injector problems.
Just curious what you used to put in the injector compensation codes? Snap on Tool?

Yep we used the snap on solus scan tool it almost does everything.

Best I could get on injectors that were in stock in Sydney was $700 inc GST better than $975 + GST from the dealer biggest saving was labour and the fact the dealer couldn't diagnose the faulty injectors so was going to replace all 4.

You are lucky that you could get the loose - here in SA we have to purchase a set at more or less R25000 (more or less AUS $ 4000).

I have a UDF filter and I use two stroke oil on a 1:200 ratio on every tank.

Hey mate, Lucky with the scan tool. I have the same problem on my 06 Lux, took it to toyota today to connect the computer to it, and i was handed a $5480 quote for 4 new injectors and associated parts From Oldmac toyota in springwood, Brisbane. Was told they dont make the DL type injector which mine has anymore so i have to buy 4 new DLC type injectors. Definately going to search elsewhere for a cheaper price. Not A Happy Chappy...

Anyone got comments on Re-man Injectors??? What toyota re-man is like quality wise???
while typing got a quote for $650 each but they are re-manufactured..

If you replace the injectors do you have to set the injector compensation codes or can you just replace the old ones and leave whatever setting is set?

Hello all.
I know I guy in Mt Cotton (licensed and very capable diesel mechanic of course), on the south side of Brisbane that will replace and tune brand new Denco diamond tipped injectors for d4d Hilux for $2,200. He also strongly suggests installing secondary after- market fuel filter with water separator(clear bulb at bottom of filter) not to make more money from customers but because he genuinely knows how sensitive these engines are to dirty diesel.
This guy is pretty small scale but seriously knows new Luxies like the back of his hand, I have seen his work and it is second to none.

PM me for his number.

All of the above. Check out Baileys Diesel group for injectors. It's $1100 for four new (reman) injectors with a 24 month warranty. Half the price of toyota and denco and twice the warranty.
Plus they are excellent to deal with, most of the blokes on here including myself have gone this way when it comes time to replace.
Ended up costing me $1900 including the injectors and egr / intake manifold clean.

Is the funny looking square pattern on top ofeach injector what you use to scan them into the ecu or is there a number I have to find??

No there is a code on a small piece of paper that comes with each injector if its a new set. If it's the same injectors going back in just put them back in their original position and good to go.

If it's a factory injector, pull the plug off and it's the long code (about 20 characters) written there.
If it's a recon injector the new code will be on a piece of paper.

Dead-set, i'm crying here looking at you blokes paying 700+ for an injector or $650 for a Denso Reman. I can sell genuine NEW ones for $440, which i happen to think is expensive, but hey, compared to the quotes all you fellas have, i look like Father Christmas LOL

Said it before, say it again, Denso DLC injectors are not really any different, its the spindle in the centre of the injector that mainly fails, and there's no difference in this part between a DLC or non DLC injectors.

Our reman ones are $324.50 each, including GST, with a 3 year / 50,000km warranty, and come with a spindle that won't fail...
