Lot of info on the forum in regards to chips.

Though the chip's not a place to skimp on price - you'll end up with fault codes or limp mode. The extra month or two saving could prove to be a lot cheaper in the long run.

Spend the extra and go with Steinbeaur, or get a tunable piggyback ECU like the HKS or Unichip. It'll be much better for your car in the long run.
Cheers,
Jay

How can I tell the difference in the 3 different chips buying second hand?

From what I have read they make 3 different styles, direct injector connected, ECU piggy back and ECU piggy back with EGT.

Can anyone help?

Direct injector connect just alters the fuel input changing length and volume of fuel injection and the piggy back types do similar and add boost in some cases, but they do similar to fuel injection but do it by increasing the fuel rail pressure. Very simple explanation but do a search her for more details. What brand/type you looking at? Maybe look at ECU tuning as it is now available with remap.

Sorry Gipsy, I didn't word my question well. CHIP IT make all 3 types, how do I tell them apart by looking at them quickly. I've seen quite a few different types in shapes and sizes of the CHIP IT units

And are all of their chips variable by the user?

Can you still get the software and maps to upload?

Look at the wiring looms anything that drives injectors will need to splicw into each injector wheres rail ones wont. Short of that ring chip it and get the model numbers

ditto, look at the wiring loom, the later chipit modules have connections for the fuel rail and the intake air pressure (one on top the engine under the intercooler and one on the fuel rail). there is also another connection which is used to program the chip and also connects to the EGT probe. The model numbers are important but if there is a manufacture date after 2013 it should be the later version. dominator is the later one and from what I've heard is still available under a different name. How much are you spending? If it is too much, consider a re-map... safer and better for around $1200.

That's my debate right now, one of the CHIP IT chips or remap

I have the last chip it and it works fine but I would have preferred to remap but it wasn't available.

With remap you can get rid of the egr which is a big bonus

Does yours have the 9 step rotary dual adjustment for increasing the tune?

Does any one have a in depth knowledge of the later versions of the CHIP with EGT sensor that wouldn't mind me calling them and picking their brain? I've tried contacting CHIP IT without success obviously due to the business closing down

One of the original owners of Chip it still available and in Sydney I think. Maybe tune it or something like that.

I had one on my last hilux (n70) for 4 years with EGT monitoring and never had a drama. Had it on a mid range tune and got a heap more power for 2 to 3 litres per hundred better off. Got even better response with a sprint booster throttle advancer and 3 inch exhaust so EGTs rarely got high. 4 years and 130,000km of not going easy on it and I never threw a code. I know there have been issues with the company but I have had a great run with it.
