I can see on the fuel tank thread where it has tried to cross thread, I will clean thread with a file before attempting again.

ps mine was completely covered as in the picture above. Done 200,000k so though it needed looking at. At least my oil strainer was spotless ....

what about getting the white collar nut off and back on?

Getting it off was easy, tap it with a flat screw driver or smiler.
But getting it to screw on square is frustrating, there is something very strange about the thread.
I had a few more goes at it and got a mate to give it a go, it just wants to cross thread. Im stumped as to why its made in such a way, its not rocked science, what am I missing here?

I looked at workshop manual and it just says to tighten with SST until arrow lines up.

Another guy I spoke to who removed his tank said his went on crooked and that's just how it is, but I don't buy that. I suggested he fill his tank and park on a steep hill and see what happens.

I wonder how many are out there after the pick up clean with the white ring on wrong and getting the tank filled with dust etc?

x2 on boxheads photo when I done my injectors it was unbeleivabele I dont no how it could even suck the whole thing was fully caked with sludge I replaced the lot as I broke the white plastic ring on the top of the fuel sender

Did you have trouble fitting the ring when new?

In the work shop manual. The ring is a non reusable part

Aha - that would explain why my old rig leaked after getting 'professionals' to install aux tank . I took it back to workshop months after noticing leak. Shudder to think what they did to fix it.

Have had the same problem with other brand fuel tanks, Ford, Holden, same type of fastener. very frustrating but have always managed to get it back on somehow.

Ordering a new ring today from Toyota and will make a tool to tighten ring so i can apply even pressure on ring as i think tapping with hammer and flat screw driver is contributing to the cross treading.

I read on here somewhere but cant find it now about putting in drain plugs on tank, anyone know where that post is?

nah.. i disagree.. you CAN reuse that white nut.

I removed my fuel tank 2 weekends ago.. 180k on the truck.. (fitting new tub so thought i should clean it out)

Make note of where the white ring lines up on the tank when its done up though.

Removed the white ring washer no problem. removed fuel pickup canister and cleaned crap out of bottom of it. then checked the mesh screen..

mine wasnt bad at all (years of the same quality fuel).. but i decided to remove that mesh screen altogether, as i have multiple inline fuel filters anyway, and this is a very difficult one to access.

Reinstalling is the exact process in reverse until you come to the white nut.

what you need to do as stated earlier is to ensure the start of the thread lines up about an inch before it engages and apply forceful pressure on both sides of the ring as you turn it.. it will take a few attempts to get it on correctly as it will want to cross thread, but you CAN do it. then simply tighten it back to the original marks and you're done.

for tightening without destorying the nut, we made up a tool, but if you've got an old spare cam belt (toothed one) you can use that to tighten it evenly too.

Thanks guys, Got it on Finally....
Did a dummy run without send unit so i wasn't trying to hold it down with O ring etc.
As Steve said lots of pressure down as the tread starts and for at least half a turn, then using an old ribbed fan belt to tighten it till half a turn left and used a hammer and a file to tap on lugs until arrow lined up, added fuel and leak tested and all sweet.

And the ring is reusable if you haven't broken all the lugs off.

I would really like to see how many are out there cross threaded...

Hey guys need some urgent help! Rather than start a new thread I found this one which I think is close. Last nite while driving home my ute started surging and eventually stalled and came to a stop on the side of the road. There was no engine or filter lights on, it just surged for a couple hundred yards and stopped. It felt like it was running out of fuel. Tried to re-start a coule of times but nothing. Opened the bonnet but couldn't see anything obvious so I pumped on the primer for a minute thinking maybe the pump in the tank had shat itself. Now although the primer didn't go hard, either I didn't pump long enough or something else is wrong it did start back up and i managed to crawl home. I didn't try and push it at all, just stayed in second as it felt like if I had tried to push it it would have stopped again. She's an 07 sr5 3.0td. Am gunna drop the tank out today and hopefully find I just have a blocked srceen or the sender is dodgy and I am really low on fuel, it's still showing a quarter of a tank now. Thanks heaps gentlemen!

Fair call on suspecting the screen is blocked given that it started again after a prime. Would be interested to know if it been cleaned before.
Assuming fuel filter is not in need of replacement a Techstream diagnostic may help but it may be one of those intermitant problems that wont provide unusual parameters

You have probably done this before for other vehicles and maybe too late but the below may help the process:

Took mine out 3 weeks ago, hardest part is dropping and reinstalling the tank itself When removing the white plastic ring retaining the strainer and float if you dont have the tool you can use some 30-35mx 5-8mm flat bar to tap the tabs around being carefull to make sure its hard against the ring so the tabs dont break off. I actually used a fair size file

Once its off i got in there with a banister brush and give it a scrub then rinse with diesel. My strainer was horrid so plungged it in and out some diesel for a while till it was clean.

When putting the ring back on use the same method but clockwise untill the strainer assemble is tight, if not tight will probly get crap and water in the tank

Well just got out there and was about to start undoing clamps when i noticed the filler hoes was all sucked in and collapsed, vacume lock? Must have a blocked breather or something but I don't know if it's done something else cos it's still hard to start, have to keep priming it.
