Guys what do you think the reason is for this 2+ltrs difference in consumption if we assume the engine is fine and driving style is same as yours?Tyre pressure? What do you have? My less driving distances in city with more constant stops? The weather temperature? We are mid 30s C with 70% humidity. The fuel quality?I cant explain this

You have mostly answered your own question but don't assume all engines and driving styles are the same. Driving style a big factor. Read the entire thread for other possible variables. Check environmental factors, clean filters, MAP, MAF etc and if still unsure get a cheap copy of techstream to analyse your engine.

About 13l/100km . 12 odd on expressway, 14/15 up steep hills, with a 1.4t poptop. That is not on cruise, and using 5th when only a light load, (on the flat or downhill.) I try for economy and drop back on hills.

I just bought an 06 SR5 d4d dual cab auto about two weeks ago, 160k on the clock, with nudge, spotties, canopy and 2" lift on Hercules Terra 265/65/17s. The computer says I'm getting 11.9-12L/100k which is a tad more than I was expecting around town. I drive very sedately.

I have an 08 sr with 31s doing 80% highway and 200k on the clock. The best i can get out of a tank is 500km or about 14l/100km. My brother drives an 05 nissan patrol 4.2 turbo with aftermarket turbo , 6" lift, 35" tyres, toolboxes, ARB bar and winch and he gets 12l/100km driving like a maniac.

Clean your Maf sensor, map filter and clean your intake. I was getting mid 11s on 33 driving it like it was stolen. Could get well over 600km if I tried to

Bad fuel economy fix

Postby will 4x4 on Wed, 24 May 2017 5:16 +0000

Read alot of posts but didnt find any answers besides "clean the sensors"
Ive read people getting 10-11l per 100kms with lift and tyres even somewith 33s
Also some people getting alot worse with and without lift and tyres.
Mine currently is 13.6l per 100.. towing a 6x4 tradie trailerwhich my guess is max of 800kg
Without the trailer im still getting 12.5l per 100kms at the very best but mostly its Above that
A trip a while ago sitting on 100-110 i manged to get 11.2l per 100kms that was about 8 months ago
Approx 6 months ago i had injectors checked and were all within spec
Mechanic also cleaned out with lower engine cleaner twice claiming be felt a big improvement with the car and the
Manifolds and egr were cleaner, im not sold though

My lux is an sr 2009 model, dual cab. 170kms
Mods-
2 inch lift
265/75 all terrains on steelys
Bullbars, snorkel
Roof baskef with wind deflector
3 inch straight through exaust

Has anyone else had the bad fuel economy problem
And found a fix for it??

Mines gotten and getting worse which makes me think theres a fault
I remember when i first bought it 18 months ago, same mods
Id get 10-11l per 100kms which i was happy with, id say the last 6 months its getting worse n worse,
I reset my odo every tank if i let it get to when the light comes on or when ive hit half a tank the kms im doing is dropping. Ive had a coloaro rc before the hilux, And that turbo felt alot stronger when it reached 1800 revs same with the d40 ive driven, and the other hiluxs ive been in, mine feels weak and slow,
Could a fault with the turbo be causing a higher increase of fuel?

Threads merged
Its been said before - generally the more things you add on the worse the economy
3" exhausts are great for top end power - not great for low down rev range economy

Thanks DeadlyBeast
The only thing ive added since getting my lux is 3 inch exhaust and a roof basket,
I wouldnt of thought that would change it by 2-3l per 100kms, i was acheieving low 10s
Now getting 13s and 13.6 towing my little work trailer
Seems odd to me to jump that much in what i think is a small amount of time,

I wouldn't think 13 while towing is out of the ordinary.
I get 11.1 average with 80% being stop start Brisbane crap traffic not towing.

If I put the camper trailer on which is about 1.2t it rises slowly, it's only there for short trips to and from, so if I was towing it everywhere I'd say it would hit 12-13.

There has been no change between style side and tray change, I'm only running 32s with 2.75" exhaust, bullbar and some tool boxes. Not much of a difference before and after ecu tune either, apart from power.

Not too bad for towing a trailer and the km done
Interesting the drop in economy coincided with the 3" ?
Still have the factory exhaust :? ...
Failing that even if injectors are in spec they do wear affecting atomisation. Some say can expect as little as 120K out of them depending on daily use

The trailer im towing is very small, id say 800kg max
When im not towing im still hitting high 12s and sometimes 13s not lead foot either, i was getting same figues before and after exhaust... nope stock went to the tip haha
Im still to my knowledge on the orignal injectors, maybe time for a upgrade

I'm using an app called fuel map, as well as showing where to get fuel and prices, I enter L and odo and it tracks economy. Image
So 11.4 -12.6 L/100km isn't the best but not the worst either.
Keen to see how it goes after egr clean.
Will, as said above I reckon 'in spec' injectors can use more fuel than 'good' injectors. Have you tried a with/without roof basket test? They can deflect a lot of wind.

Cheers

nah i havnt yet mate, but judging from the kms per tank i havnt noticed a change, it there was it would be very little. Nothing dramatic
Last tank i got was 12.9. Before i installed a roof basket my normal week of driving was still high 12s- mid 13s
Seems like bp is working for you, i might try it, my local is woolies and shell,
When i have a chance ill take it to a diesel injection place in town and get them to run another test.

Miss having good fuel economy and wish i knew what is causing the sudden change over the last 6 months. Still thinking its something in the engine at fault, a sensor or something.

My worked ve ss got under 10s  500kms from half tank sitting on the hwy aint bad
6lt in a hilux  Think im dreaming
