D4D Fuel economy

Postby hodgo81 on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 2:03 +0000

I know there has been a few threads about fuel economy in the past, but most of them seemed to go off topic or nowhere.

Anyway I have about 13000km on my SR Extracab now, and I'm not really impressed with the fuel economy. Admittedly I have a few extras like everyone else. Extra battery Toyota bullbar, cooper ST 225/75R16 (which I noticed knocked about 0.5/L straight away)
But the claimed figures are still a joke!!!!

I have never got my fuel consumption below 10L/100km, I have got close but generally I get between 10.5 and 11. The best I got was mostly city driving with the AC on, the more Hwy driving I do without AC the worse i get.
I just did a 3000km road trip 95% highway with 2 motorbikes on the back and every tank load was between 600-620km to the fuel light

How on earth can toyota get away with advertise a vehicle getting 8.6. Should I make mention of this at the next service? is it possible I have injector issues like others have had.

Hodgo,

The first tank of fuel my hilux got when new, and its an auto D4D, was 9.1 litres per 100km....I though the fuel gauge was brocken how good it was.....

now I average 11 to 11.5 per 100km with all the fruit and 33's, and that is spot on as I run a speedo correction unit.

give it a few kays, as the engine runs in the fuel economy will get better.

The figures are based on a standard test - ADR 81/01. It's not intended to indicate what you would get in real life driving (way too many variables), just so that you can compare fuel consumption between different vehicles in controlled conditions.

Hodgo, before I fitted all my accessories at about 10,000Km on the speedo I had my fuel economy down to 8.3L/100.
I don't floor the accelerator when I take off, but otherwise drive pretty normally.
That was mainly from driving around the western suburbs of sydney, as well as one trip down to Thredbo with the tub loaded with 9 peoples luggage, and 4 passengers on board. There was maybe 2-300km of off roading included in the 10K as well.
Now at 15,000km I've got 31" tyres, lockers, ARB Deluxe bar, Drawers with 80Lt water tank (I only keep about 30Lt in it), 140Lt Long Ranger tank and a DP Chip I am on 8.7/100. I haven't reset the calculator since fitting the extras so this figure may go up a bit still as I drive more.
08 D/cab SR5, ARB Front & Rear Diff locks, ARB Deluxe Bar, Dual Battery, Lightforce 240HID's, ORS Rear Drawers, OME Nitro Sport Suspension kit, ARB Side steps & brush bars, Taipan 3" exhaust.

Previous lux was able to get 8's if sitting on 100, 9's-10's if on 110 and after all the mods averaged daround 10-11 around town and less on the highway...

Newlux is around 11 - 12 with the 33's, chip and winch etc....

If your economy is really crap it normally indicates a bad injector...

When stock I was getting about 8.5 as an average- that's worked out as well- not using the trip computer as it's well out.

Now with canopy, 31's and a sahara bar I get about 9.7.

I average about 10-11 around town. 10 if i take it easy try not to rev her over 2500rpm, 11if i give it to her. I have 05 manual, lift, bull bar with winch,2nd battery, Mickeys ATZ 265/75/16,heavy duty steel drop side tray and a 60Lt water tank full most of the time. Not sure of highway driving as yet as i always sit on about 120km-130km.

Thanks for giving me an idea of how you are going.

I dont think I am too heavy footed, and I am usually completely unloaded half the time.

I sat down and did the figures for every tank (since I had fuel card reciepts) and for my last trip. On the way down I had 2 motorbikes on the back and got about 11.1 for each tank. On the return I only had 1 motorbike and I got 10.9 for both tanks of fuel. The best I ever got was 10.1L/100km and that was with the shitty standard tyres.

Oh yeah and PJG I know the recorded figues are to a controlled standard, but that standard must be very rigged to Lie in favour of diesels. I know someone that bought a 2wd V6 D/C same time as me and his gets 10-11L/100km and is quoted as 13. I really think its false advertising to trick people into buying diesels.

You're comparing to a 2wd which is at least a couple of hundred kgs lighter, and has less rolling resistance since it isn't turning the front diff (might even have smaller/narrower tyres than the 4wd? meaning even less rolling resistance) - it's apples vs oranges. Maybe it's false adv or maybe if you were driving a petrol version under the same conditions you'd still be getting worse economy than what Toyota claim. Are Toyota claiming 13L/100 for the 2wd V6? Coz that's what they claim for the 4wd V6, and it's pretty unlikely they'd be the same in real life conditions. I know if I was driving it, it would be more like 15-20L/100km :D

So all those who have quoted their figures that have bigger tyres, have you worked out what the real economy is due to the size difference? If my calculations are correct, 2" greater diameter is about an extra 7% distance than what is stated on your odo.

I have a dual-cab , turbo diesel , 2" lifted , 265/75/16 , front bar , roof-rack , and drive like YA MOTHER  used to .
According to the trip meter , we get around 12.5 l / 100klms , dont know if thats good or what , it seems to only get around 550klms per tank .Normally when i drop the camper trailer ( full of crap ) behind it , it goes up to around 15liters / 100klms , BUT , for some reason the other day it just seems to stay on 12.5 / 12.6 for the whole trip . Buggered if i know ! , but happy with it .

Should i have any conserns or what ? .

Cheers

I was getting around 620 kms before the fuel light lit up at about 19,000 km in 2008. I had the fuel filter sorted and now hit 660km before the light is lit up. I run on 20" ROHs and pretty much stick to speed limits and use my cruise control when I remember. That's my 2 cents.

2 cents from me, there is a big diffrents in figgers here, 08 sr5 auto, 31's, 65mm lift, DP chip, exhaust mods, hard lid, 5000km trip 8.7l/100, best out of a tank 740km, about 8.2l/100 mostly hwy fully loaded doing about 110km/h. worst 11.2l/100 fully loaded on the dirt. and it dose 190km/h flat. and yes i know i'm a hoon.

Hi Guys,

My 09 Dual Cab has a canopy, and otherwise stock (for the moment.....). I have done 10000kms so far and around town i average about 680kms per tank (i usually replace 67-68lts of the 70lt at the bowser). On a recent trip to Kalgoorlie with 3 people and a baby, baggage, a full 95lt Evacool and all the baby crap you can imagine (thanks to the handbrake...) i got 750kms from the tank and still replaced the 67-68lts. I sat on 110 all the way with the cruise control on. Very impressed

Hi all I have a 09 SR5 Turbo Diesel and was getting 780 to 800 kms per 65ish litres. Then I had a 40k service and put 31" ATR coopers at the same time, now I am struggling to get 640ks per 65lts. I thought it may be the tyres, I took it to Toyota and they are blaming diesel quality but did mention that a few codes were incorrect, will keep you updated. Thinking off throwing some stock wheels on to test and see if this is the issue. with the new tyres i experienced a slower take off due to increase in size i would say and heavier steering. Contributing factors????

I still think the Lux is Awesome but would really like my fuel economy back.

Take care all,
