2KD won't start

Postby J_bosson on Sat, 04 Jun 2022 5:03 +0000

Hi all

My Hilux has been standing for a year - it just turns over and won't start

I connected Techstream and when I run the fuel pump in test mode it reports pressure - there are no fault codes.

What can I check next?

regards
John

Pump the fuel manually via the priming pump on the filter. Remove the out line from the filter and pump until no bubbles appear, reconnect and see if it runs. Air in fuel lines are not uncommon.

Techstream won't give a code unless the engine has run.

I have been thru. this a few times with 'Barn Finds'

- The diesel have h2o

- 'Someone' had put unleaded into tank

So what gypsy said x 2 to fix the 1st 1 and fill up the tank to the top to solve the 2nd 1

I have removed the line out of the pump on the filter already and there is fuel when I pump it.
Does the high pressure fuel pump need bleeding by removing the lines to the injectors?

No it's self bleeding. Are you sure it's diesel and not water or petrol? What was done to the truck recently or before it was laid up? With the fuel line connected, pump until the primer goes hard. Make sure you wait until the glow plug light goes out.

Pretty difficult to diagnose a truck on the other side of the world. ;)

We know it's been still for around 12 months. Has it had fresh fuel in that time? Diesel fuel will go off and the cetane rating goes down fairly quickly after it starts to go.
If the fuel has been in the tank for some time (more than 12 months) then I'd consider flushing the lines with a fresh gut Full-"O"-Fuel.

Update in case anyone else has this problem: no compression.
Piston rings were stuck in the piston grooves due to carbon buildup from a lack of maintenance.
Engine in pieces and going off to the engineering company for a rebuild.

Thanks for the update, sad to hear it's a rebuild :( if it's carboned up its time anyway. Make sure the oil pickup filter is not blocked but this should be a no brain issue with a rebuild.
