Fuel gauge doesn’t work after recall

Postby wbute on Fri, 19 Jun 2020 10:44 +0000

Hi, after several years my 2008 Hilux has returned from my father in law. I sold it to him and he has now given it to my son(lucky boy).
In the time he had it, apparently it went back for a recall, possibly air bag. When he got it back the fuel gauge has been stuck on empty and the fuel light is on. He didn’t take it back to get it fixed for some reason.
Any ideas what may be the problem??
It’s a SR single cab D4D.

Check the wiring at the plugs on the back of the instrument cluster, if the other gauges work it will most likley be the fuel sender wire, may have come out of the plug. If you need one I can email you an electrical schematic that should cover that model.

Would they have pulled the dash out to do a air bag recall?

Dont know. But you will have to if you want to start trouble shooting. Maybe have a quick look at the tank sender unit wiring if you can get at it, but I doubt they would have been near there either. Find out the colour of the sender wire and trace it.
Try shorting the sender unit wire at the tank to ground through a bulb type test light and see if it makes the gauge rise, if it does means the fault is in the tank or the senders earth wire. If the gauge doesn respond then do the same thing to the same colour wire behind the dash, if it responds means the fault is in the sender wire, if it doesnt it will be a dash fault, gauge or circuit board.

They shouldn't need to take the dash out to replace the clock spring.

Does it have an after market fuel tank? I have a long range tank and they did the crossmember recall and airbag recall at the same time. To do the crossmember recall they had to drop the tank. Maybe the fuel sender wire came off the tank in the process

Fixed it when I finally got time. The float arm had fallen off the sender. Luckily the little keeper was still on the sender so I just put it back on. I pulled the tray off, made life much easier.
The water in fuel light just needed resetting.
Thanks for your help.

Oh and the recall was the cross member and the spiral wire. Why were they recalled for those?
