Brown Davis 153 litre tank

G’day guys,
I’m thinking of getting one of the Brown Davis long range fuel tanks - the 153 litre (part number TH05R3). Does anyone have experience with one of these and what the ground clearance is like etc.? Would you buy it again? Cheers.

Had mine for as long as I've had the vehicle (2007). Never had any clearance problems, no evidence of ever touching it... I don't do rock crawling but this vehicle has done a lot of outback tracks and many high country trails. Some of the mounts are starting to rust but nothing a bit of TLC cant fix.

Have a look at the plastic ARB tank - it's lighter. The only negative is no drain plug. I would look at that next.

Did you have to 'move' spare wheel ?

If you did, did you put it up on the roof racks or top of canopy ?

Does this one means you have to 'move' the spare ?

TIA

Other bonus with the plastic is if you do bounce it off a few rocks, it won't deform and just bounces back. Downside is it's only 120l....

Thanks for the feedback hiluxxury.
Yes I have looked (online) at the poly tanks - both the ARB & the Brown Davis, and I like the look of both. As you say, the lack of a drain plug is a bit of a downer, not so much because of dirty fuel but because I know one day I will put petrol in the tank, and a plug would make the fix a lot easier. Not having a plug is not a deal breaker though - it’s more that the ARB poly tank hangs 45 to 50 mm lower than the factory tank (I asked ARB). I emailed Brown Davis asking about this for their 153 litre tank and they claim there is no change in ground clearance, but I’m a bit sceptical. Do you know if your tank hangs any lower than the original factory tank, and if so by how much? Again, thanks for your help.

Sorry - I just went out and checked. Mine is a Long Ranger 140ltr tank. It sits 110mm lower than the main chassis/frame rail. I can't remember how low the stock tank sat.

That’s sounds about right for the Long Ranger. The original tank sits approx 50mm below the rails.

I have the 145 L Brown and Davis for a couple of years. It's been flawless. Haven't hit it yet. The thing you really need to look for is who installs it. I got mine 'professionally' installed and they didn't move the wiring loom out of the way properly. So the wiring loom ended up wearing through. Toyota wanted $2000 to replace the rear wiring loom. The tank is brilliant. No problems at all. Highly recommend it.

I resisted the ARB Polytanks, but after feedback on here I bit the bullet and got one and love it. I have the 145l diesel on a 2013 Hilux, it has had the odd bash or two; but that says more about where we have been than the tank sitting too low. The things that sealed the purchase for me was the fact that they didn't have to modify the sender like with some other tanks, the relatively low weight and the reasonable price compared to the competition.

When I installed my Long Ranger, the sender only needed its wire arm bent a little.

TBH I could have left it as after a while you learn how much is in your tank... I know that I get 400kms before the fuel gauge moves and I have 15ltrs remaining when the light comes on.

X2 for the ARB plastic tank. Only thing was there instructions for torquing the sender unit is a bit off. Took a bit to get mine to stop weeping....just dont over do it...and without a hoist it will take you longer than 2hrs that ARB claim they do it in.

I ended up going with the Brown Davis 145 litre poly tank. $1319 installed. Looks like a fairly solid bit of kit.

Starting with a full tank the vehicle did 520 km before the fuel gauge needle moved, 870 km when the gauge read ½, and 1150 km until the fuel light came on. The driving conditions were approximately 500 km highway, 500 km city, and 150 km low range.

124 litres to fill the tank once the fuel light came on – so presumably 21 litres left at that point, giving a total range to empty of around 1350 km’s.

Tackled some moderate 4wd’ing around Mt Stirling – couple of easy mud holes, some bumps in the road that tested ground clearance etc. All good – never touched the tank. The bottom of the tank hangs approx. 50 mm lower than the original, but there’s other stuff to get hung up on that sits lower in some area’s. I don’t have any suspension lift, although I’m planning on upgrading suspension later in the year.
