Hi I have tried looking for this with no luck i have a dual cab 2012 D4D I run out of fuel at 1/4 of a tank but still have 30 litres in the tank. I noticed a lot of people have trouble with the cluster but this is different i think as I still have 30l in the tank. I am thinking theres a problem in the tank has anyone had this issue? Thanks

That means you only put in 46lts to fill up
You will have to drop the tank and check out the pickup.

Half and hour to check the instrument cluster board vs half a day to check the fuel tank pickup
Unless you have the SST it can be very difficult to remove and replace the sender unit retainer collar without destroying it
When low on fuel check that the fuel lines and tank have not distorted, if so pull the fuel tank breather on top of the tank and give it a good clean out.
The breather is in a stupid place for Australian conditions - worth relocating

I'm driving a 2012 KUN26R and the truck has been towed to a local workshop twice in as many weeks. After USD350 spent, I realized I ran out of fuel! The gauge showed 1/4 tank left.

hey guys i had the same issue. Thanks to Vedat and the other members for the super helpful info! Ive actually gotten the gauge board soldered and am anxiously waiting for the gauge to below 1/4 tank (its bloody nerve racking). But it seems to have worked. Ill report back in the next couple of days. I just did a 100km cruise to see if the needle was moving from where it was below half tank and it has reached the quarter tank now. Moment of truth around the corner....Cheers!

Would this extended to Toyota Australia?

Unlikely. TNZ and TAU are completely different

Thanks CamboT, Your info was spot on. After running out of fuel again at qtr tank I took it to CMI here in in southern Adelaide only to get the run around and story that diagnosis of fuel sender at $149 will be req’d before doing anything. I asked about warranty and was told it won’t be covered. (2013 SR DC). They would take the vehicle for the day for diagnosis and then any defects assessed on case by case basis. No good will at this place. $1149 for new cluster or send it out for repair at $220.
30 minutes job done. Low fuel light came here on for first time since 2015. Cheers.

Tip her folks... Never trust your fuel gauge and reset your trip meter every fill-up, remember your normal fuel range and trust that before the gauge. I always keep mine filled after each long trip and if the tripmeter reaches around 500ks. My range is around 7-800ks to empty and regularly checking fuel consumption by fuel in divided by hundreds of kms i.e. 50 litres in divided by 5 (500km) After 500km you probably need 50litres give or take. Simple rule of thumb in my 2013 1kd is around 10 litres per 100ks, so easy as... 78litre tank=780km.

2014 SR5. Had the same issue as everyone on here, fuel running out at just around or below the quarter mark with 75kms left on the range, pulled the Fuel sender out this arvo and replaced it, after I siphoned the fuel the problem changed, the needle went to empty but conked out with 156km range left.
Pulled the gauge cluster out, took @CamboT's advice with the resistor pic and what a beauty! Worked a treat, with a little soldering iron from Jaycar and some solder, reflowed and added a tiny bit of solder, took about 45mins total with removing and installing the cluster. The fuel light comes on and range is fixed. Thanks again everyone!

Have been living with issue for 12 months now 2013 hilux.
Glad there is a solution, got a quote from Toyota for a repair for $500, daylight robbery for the actual fix. However I don't understand how this isn't a recall item, they know what the issue is they know it's their fault and it's not like running out of fuel in Australia isn't life threatening. 1/4 of a tank could easily leave you 100km from civilisation.
