2012 -2013 Faulty fuel gauge

Postby Xr8tdd on Wed, 09 Aug 2017 8:29 +0000

Hi guys

Had some isssues with my 2013 Toyota hilux fuel gauge recently. Have run out of fuel a couple of times now when my fuel gauge on instrument cluster says I still have a 1/4 a tank left. I thought I had narrowed it down to being the fuel sender unit in the tank but after spending $130 at Toyota and installing the unit my self I don't think it has solved the problem.

On the way to work this morning I thought I'd try give the dash above the cluster a few good taps and noticed the needle slowly moved down which leads me to believe that fuel gauge in cluster is the issue. Has anyone had this same issue? And what did you do to fix it? Is there anyone that specialisises in instrument clusters? Located in Perth wa. Look forward to hearing from those that have had similar issues. Cheers

Nah mate but if it a sticky needle, wouldn't a bit of silicone lube do the trick? I just googled "auto instrument repair" and it looks like a few places around Perth.

Not sure if this is the same problem, but the fuel avg. readout above the radio on mine constantly stays on 8.2L when I know damn well my Hilux is using more then that around town. What would cause this?

Have you ever reset it ? It's not like Range that is connected to tank refills, it needs to be manually reset using the button on the left of screen.

I've reset it a few times. Just goes back to 8.2L everytime.

Going by this figure I should be getting 850kms to a standard tank which I could only ever dream of. I get around 500-550km usually.

Iv found that the. "Stepper motor" that controls the fuel needle is faulty. Apparently it's a common problem with hilux after 2010 where it stops on 1/4 tank. Iv sourced a old cluster with a working motor and am gonna try to solder the working one in after removing the faulty one.

might pull the metal cover off & check your tank.
i once had a skippy go under my car and pushed a dent in the plastic tank. the metal cover sprung back out but the plastic tank didn't. ran out a diesel a couple of times before i worked it out.

I am pretty sure i saw in the manual somewhere that the DTE is a guide only.

We are driving cars, not aircraft.

Our gauges are indicators only and make no claim to being accurate to the last degree.

The DTE works off the fuel gauge sender unit and fuel flow, then has a calculated GUESS.

Use your fuel gauge, was it reading empty with the low fuel light on?

Seeing this merge.
It seems I need to fix my cluster cause that doesn't even read empty when the car dies n neither does the fuel light come up.

I have this issue. Long range tank and the gauge only ever gets to 1/4 tank , recently it seems to be getting worse and sometimes pulls stumps at 1/2 tank and goes no lower. Ive been using the trip meter for years so know where I'm at with fuel level and haven't run out but a fix sure would be nice... Are we all thinking the gauge is most likely the cause???
