Engine cuts out at start when parked on an incline

Postby MLTZER on Sun, 27 Mar 2016 9:11 +0000

So after I had installed a baileys secondary fuel filter I've noticed that when I leave the car parked on an incline (nose up tail down) over night that when I go and start it it will start, and then cut our a second or two later. It will start the second time no worries though.

I've checked for leaks but nothing I can see. I have noticed the yellow cup on the baileys filter is full. Would that be water or does diesel go in their too?

Yes diesel goes there too, sounds like there's air getting in somewhere.

Yeah it's just really odd that it only happens when parked on the incline. Air getting in would also mean a leak though

Not necessarily. There's no pressure in that side of the fuel system, it's just drawing from the tank.

Oh ok. im not sure where the air leak will be then. I'll go over it all again and see if anything is loose

I've got the same problem.

It will start and run for 10 - 15sec then stall. Restarting it will take up to 30 - 45sec of cranking it over to start again.

I too park on an incline and it only does it after being left over night. It went away for awhile but now that it's cooling down it's back again.

I've had it back to where it was fitted. NO LEAKS apparently. Mine is set up pre original filter. ( is pre or post original filter better ? )

It was suggested to change the micron rating but I'm pretty sure it's the same as the original.

I'm pretty sure its better to get post original filter, as the Baileys is a finer filter than original

Does it still run at under 1/4 of a tank?

Check your fittings, clamps and hoses - the system is under suction, when that suction levels back on shutdown it can draw air in. Make sure sealing orings and locking rings are tight. Instead of cranking it for an extended period pop the bonnet and prime it with the OEM filter - this will help.

Had the same issue with mine and a slightly loose hose caused it on the secondary filter. Only play up if you shut the car down for more than 4 hours. If everything is tight it could be a leak in the primer on the oem filter.

Or a few people have mentioned cracked oem filter housings allowing air in.

Issue is normally the brass fittings that go into the black filter housing. Make sure that you apply some thread locker or sealing tape (MUCH prefer the first) to ensure they do not leak.

This has nothing to do with the finer micron filtering capabilities... it would be a permanent issue, not only isolated to after a period of sitting or when fuel flow is at its lowest (issue would be worse under full throttle).

As stated, this is a vacuum system, so if there is a leak, air leaks in, not fuel out.

Hope this helps.
