2006 D4D squeaking noise on start up.

Postby stevessss on Wed, 10 Dec 2014 6:44 +0000

Hi Guys,

My diesel Hilux sounded like it had a squeaky fan belt today but I don't think it was.

I am puzzled as to what makes a soft squeaky noise - air leak maybe?

Thanks,

S

What I'm wondering is if fuel injectors make a squeaky noise, or air getting into fuel filter.

Does the noise go away when you depress the clutch?

I've noticed mine does if it rains overnight, I guessed it is water getting through the bonnet scoop to the pullies.

If it does it every cold start get a length of plastic hose and hold one end to your ear and poke the other end round where you think the noise is coming from until you find where it is loudest, just be careful round the pulleys. There are dozens of things that could make a squeak, and there are a lot of different squeaks, very vague description of the symptom, how old is the car?

Get someone to hold your exhaust tailpipe when you start it to see if it makes any diffrence. Mine squeaks on start up when cold. Just not got around to fixing it yet.

I read in another thread somewhere that the bonnet latch can squeak.

Thank you guys.

From what you have all said, I feel it is nothing to worry about ie fuel system.

There was rain the night before. I also had the bonnet up the night before (rain wasn't falling) maybe bonnet latch as suggested, or moisture in pulley.

Thanks,

S

Just change the fan belt, they are cheap and easy to change.
Rotate your idler pulleys by hand while your at it, they should be silky smooth, if not change them too.

The belt may still look good but when they wear the belt starts to run in the root of the V's, not on the sides of the V's as designed.

Mine was starting to squeak on startup after rain at about 85K

get a can of wd 40 and spray a bit on the fan belt on th side that touches the pulleys. if that fixes it it's the fan belt, if not spray some one the centre of each pulley in turn. if the squeak stops after you spray one of them you've isolated the faulty pulley. if neither of these things works, can't help any more.
cheer.

Thanks I am going to try as suggested.

A couple of times when I went to start it I didn't turn the key long enough and it did the squeak and stalled but I think that is different it was more like a backfire and stall.

Most likely the clutch fork pivot. Old boxhead55 had a little write up on how he fixes the issue using a grease gun and needle. Will have to look it up when I get to a pc
