V6, dirty fuel filter?

Postby taresk on Thu, 27 Mar 2014 6:44 +0000

Hi,
Having an issue with starting at the moment, did a search but only turned up threads on the D4D.

Last few weeks, the old bus has been taking quite a long time to kick over when cold, just wondering if it's likely that my fuel filter is clogged?

Because it shows no sign of lacking spark or battery power, once it's going it goes well, so all I can think of is restriction in the fuel supply. I have taken it down to the warning light a few times while working out my range, so may have picked up crap from the tank bottom.

There has been quite a few fuel pumps replaced due to this concern. Always cold first start.

The pumps sometimes get tired but most of them have a worn fuel leak back valve. Which means the pump has to pressures the fuel system again before it can start. This can sometimes take over 10 cranks.

All pump replacements have fixed the concern.

The pump is in the tank isn't it?

Certainly is. :)
Its easy enough to get to once you drop the petrol tank. Relatively easy job if you are mechanically minded.
Only 2 straps hold it up. Just have to disconnect pump wiring and the filler and breather pipes.

Good to know, I'll see if I can track down a cheap pump and if we ever get a dry day around here, i'll have a crack at it.

Thanks guys :)

Bh is almost definitely on the money but if you have access to a fuel pressure gauge you could check it from a cold start just to confirm first. Hate to see you fit a pump and it not fix it.

Sorry man, not knocking your input at all. Just been bitten recently giving what I thought was good advice and got bitten in the bum and given a bit of flack for my trouble.

Ah yea, would a scan gauge or similar OBD2 readrer be able to tell you the fuel pressure at start up?
Or is that a different reading?

Na mate, not on the petrol.

Forget I said anything. Boxhead will be right. Like I said, I had a bad experience recently and am just over cautious ATM.

As you were. 8-)

My brief search tells me it'll be about $150 for a genuine pump, so it's not going to break the bank, and should last another 100,000km.
If it's not the cause, a new pump isn't really wasted money IMO, so it's all good.

Or maybe I should take advantage of the situation to look into fitting a high flow Tacoma pump with the external filter, hmmm...

No don't do that mate you larger pump will increase rail pressure and make you fuel consumption worse
Go the gen unit just make sure you get all the required orings as well

You know i'd never actually considered the effect on economy of the high flow pump, when I read about them they were going onto TRD blown engines with stand-alone management, so very different kettle of fish ;)

Not sure if the kit I was looking at had all the seals included, I'll make some enquiries next week (after TTC).

Higher flow pump wont raise rail pressure unless it out flows the pressure regulator which is unlikely, but it will circulate more fuel which may warm the fuel up more over time.

The v6 uses a return less fuel system and a two speed fuel pump.
If it runs a high speed for too long this causes all sorts of greafe.

The facelift v6 has now got a duty controlled fuel pump same as is in the fj landcruiser. Has variable speeds.

I know what a duty controlled pump is but does this meen the regulator has been replaced altogether? Does this meen there's a fuel pressure sensor now?

No still has the regulator is the fuel tank in the fuel pump module. Have had a few block and fuel pressure increases and dramas begin. We also have had Repco fuel pumps installed and the fuel pressure is constantly higher. Still not at the Point the pressure Relieafe valve opens but fuel consumption suffered. Swapped the non gen pumps out and fitted gen units. All good now.
Went down the path of why with Repco and got they are a higher flow pump.

All proven via pressure gauge. At the 1/2 rate and full on. The pressure was 10 percent higher.

Don't get me wrong the truck would have had heaps of power but the customer came to us with a complaint of high fuel consumption.

After asking what has been done in the past they sad a new pump had been fitted by an Inderpentant. To solve the hard to start in the morning problem. Fitted the pressure gage and the results spoke for themselves.

Also I think the pump cost more then the toyota unit.

Oh ok. Thought they might use pwm to control fuel pressure on its own. Not used to pressure sensors on port injection systems. Sorry to pick your brain, just like to keep up with what's out there.
Gotta try, I'm an independent.
